tielan: Yoda, deal with it (SW - Yoda deal)
Monday, May 10th, 2021 02:05 pm
Having had a fairly busy weekend, it is now monday morning (well, monday afternoon by this point) and all I want to do is nap.

Luckily I have nothing on tonight.

Unluckily there are at least three hours of work before it is 'tonight'.

--

Saturday morning, I went around to visit a friend with health issues and did some work in her garden. Helped move things, dig out plants and replant them, weed stuff, trim things. She has two housemates but one has been very depressed the last six months and the cancer of the other who is also a friend of mine has just come back and now it's all about how long she'll live. *sigh*

Saturday afternoon, I went to 4:30pm church. Much smaller - only about 30 people - but good. Going to go a bit more regularly because Sunday is getting eaten up by hockey.

Saturday night, Mother's Day dinner at a local new restaurant.

Sunday morning, whitewashed the henhouse. Messier and more difficult than one might expect.

Also Sunday morning: tried to sort out a situation where the goalie from Team 1 wasn't able to make her game and Team 2 goalie is a cancer survivor a year out. I'm Team 3 goalie, but I've played in higher grades and been goalie for higher grades, and rather than put someone in straight up, the coach asked if I would play for Team 1. I was okay with it except that I would be playing 3 games straight. Not so great. The main thing was that they didn't want someone who didn't know goalieing to be in for Team 1 which is playing A-grade this year. However in the end, we asked for a volunteer and someone did...except she didn't realise she was volunteering to be goalie. But she was a good sport and padded up for the game.

I played the Team 1 game and didn't touch the ball once, I think! There was a hairy moment when the ball rebounded off a goalpost and across the front of the goal behind me. Everyone thought it had gone out, but it was still in play and I wasn't confident I could get to it before the opposing team did. I had to yell at the backs, because they'd thought it had gone out. We got it out to the sidelines and that put it out of play at least.

...I've just realised why I was so confused at the Team 2 game where I played on the field. I was sure that we'd played this team before and didn't know why we were playing them again. Except that we hadn't played this team, Team 3 had played this team and I was in the gear (and did a shocking job). It's the same club, different team, one grade up. No wonder I was confused.

No goals from me, alas, although I passed one across to our centre forward and she scored. I'm a good playmaker. That said, I missed getting two goals in, and had a couple more opportunities if the ball had been passed to me. Centre forward again - she's good at going for the goal - our top goalscorer, but not always the best at passing the ball off once she's in the circle.

While Team 3 played, Team 2 had some drinks and nibblies at the grounds, cheered on our team-mate who was in goals, even when she missed the ball and the opponents ended up scoring a goal. It was nice to have some time to socialise with my team. I either miss the warm-up or I miss the afterword, because our games are nearly always side by side with Team 3. I mean, I asked for that, to try to minimise the interruption to my day, but...it's not ideal when it comes to participating in team spirit.

On the way home, I passed a food truck, and figured I'd give it a go. Bought a lamb biryani which was pretty pricey...

It was cold. A cold box of lightly-spiced rice, with five chunks of lamb, and a badly-peeled boiled egg. Not the dinner I was expecting. So I posted it on the local group, warning people not to bother with the lamb biryani. A couple of people asked why I didn't take it back (because one doesn't take food back to food trucks? Would they even refund me? Also: by the time I realised it really wasn't what I'd ordered, I was home and wasn't going to go out again). Several people made suggestions for alternatives. One woman wistfully commented on her desire to do a local 'dinner swap' (which I gently let down by pointing out that the issues would be portion size, meat vs. vegie, allergies and intolerances, etc.) One guy sneered 'first world problems' (but I'm pretty sure he's a guy who whines about petty 'first world problems' on the group - or else he thinks anything that doesn't pertain to a white middle-aged man is obvs a first world problem; he's that type) and I pointed out that the issue of lying about one's product is a moral issue which transcends first world or third world. And then two people - probably a husband and wife - demanded that I try the chicken rolls (which are allegedly really good) and how did I know that they wouldn't refund me?? *eyeroll*

So that was my Sunday night drama.

Today (it's now past 6pm) was a madcrazy day of scrambling around trying to fix things, record things, read through notes and deal with the temporary consultant in the area I'm in who has a rather annoying habit of questioning my competence. "Have you looked at this note (it's the first thing that comes up)? Have you considered this thing? (It's an obvious consideration that would otherwise prevent the whole section from working.)"

They haven't said they'll be renewing my contract yet, although I guess it's still at least six weeks away...

Did you know that according to the [community profile] rarepairsexchange eligibility requirements, MCU Maria/Steve passes if you exclude works that I wrote or influenced, but fails if you don't?

Bummer!

Not that I'd get the pairing even if I did participate. Many years of hoping and being disappointed in there.

In other fannish exchange news, [community profile] everywoman is back! I mean, I won't get Maria anyway (who? Ohhh, you mean CAROL's girlfriend...or is it Tony's mom? Welcome to my fannish life!) but I'm tempted to try.
