Pilot is a bit iffy. Best episode are around ep 4 and 5. They got really shafted by the strike, getting hit just as they were breaking in a new storyline.
And YES. I could write (and have written) long odes about how much I love how they are writing the main relationship. It's kinda like a less smartypants version of Pushing Daisies where the romance isn't just some often neglected side part of the story. It just gives you the vibe that actual thought goes into it and it's actually *plotted* by the writers.
Like within the first 5 episode or so there were roughly 10 moments where I just KNEW that any other show would have dragged it out endlessly. On a normal show it wouldh have taken two seasons and lots of angsting till she finds out he's a vampire, it would take another season till she feels she can trust him again, it would take another two seasons till she copes with him having known her as a kid ect. And Moonlight instead goes and has them interact like normal sane people and actually talk about it.
I think it gives more of an impression of them as balanced people - that they're still going about, doing the job, but they've got issues to deal with along the way. And although they deal with some of them, other issues still lurk beneath the surface, unbeknownst to either party.
It's not all about the work, or all about the romance - it's about the characters as people, dealing with what people deal with...except, you know, for the whole fictional vampire thing. :)
I think what really sells me on the show is that they seem to take a lot of couple clichees and sidestep them. I watch a lot of shows that have romance or even are about romance, so it gives me pleasure to see the typical couple traps laid out for them and then see them *not* fall in and instead find a graceful way around them.
And what really sells me on the couple is that she feels like somebody who really wants to be there. A lot of shows I watch you either have the coworkers who act like there isn't anything between them. Or you have one partner (usually the female) be sucked into a situation where you aren't sure if she is really comfortable with it. Like Mulder and Scully or Clark and Lana. Yes, Scully grew to care about Mulder's cause, but that wasn't what she wanted originally. And Lana never signed up to be the lover of an alien. I know most people think that drives up the drama factor, but it just serves to make me queasy.
While with Mick and Beth, I believe she wants to be there. Even if she didn't have Mick, she would still want to investigate the supernatural because it fascinates her and because she loves her job as a journalist and wants to do the daring thing. She really is where she wants to be and I really like that she feels like she has a strong identity. And Mick at the moment isn't some tortured hero who has to decide between his mission and love, or has to put his love aside for his mission. Mick has no mission. Mick mostly really wants to connect to somebody. She isn't some obstacle to his mission and his mission isn't an obstacle to her. If anything they are interlinked.
Of course there are troubles. She is gungho and excited about the vampire deal (which is perfect for his vampire angst) even though she clearly doesn't know exactly what she is doing. Yet at the same time, she also doesn't come across like a totally brainless romance heroine who just surgically attached herself to the hero and blindly worships him without rhyme or reason.
Have seen eps 4&5 and have downloaded to #11. The titles are worrying me, though!
There are two more episodes that I think are really stand outs to me too. The one with the serial killer on death row and the one where they go to New York.
That doesn't mean that the other episodes are bad, but those two stand out to me.
I like that it's angst-lite. They really could go the Terrible Angst storyline with the vampire-lover and human-beloved, but they don't seem to be tending that way.
It's an impressive feat given that the television genre usually seems to need to shove any given point repeatedly in your face, or else flash it once and dismiss it thereafter.
And, yeah, Mick isn't on a specific mission or crusade. He wants to connect with humans and what he was - to some degree I think he does envy them what they have but he respects what they are, too, and won't use them just because they're mortal. (The way his friend John-the-400 y.o. vamp tends to do.)
My guess is that Mick sees part of his connection with humans through Beth and the fact that it was rescuing her that changed his outlook. So the connection to her is stronger - and reinforced by the fact that Beth is interested and curious, and recognises that there's something between them and (as far as I've seen) seems willing to take the step.
It'll make it particularly interesting as the series goes on - particularly if the UST continues without setback and Mick begins to face the decision Coralynn made to turn him. I'm definitely curious to see if they address that.
Yeah, I watch. I've not seen the most recent ep yet, but other than that... I really like the show and up to the last ep (possibly), it has a great triangle dynamic in which all three involved are real people and none turn into jealous monsters in order to satisfy drama or tension. Tis a fun show to watch. :)
I have watched up through episode 10 (didn't realize I was actually two eps back) and so far Beth/Josh are still hanging on. Tis a great dynamic to watch because normally by now Josh would be (a) stepping back just so that Beth will be happy (content to see her smile), (b) a raging monster of jealousy, (c) twisted out of character to justify Beth/Mick, but from what I've seen, he hasn't yet. I really love Josh in this show because he acts like an adult and because he obviously loves Beth. I hope she stays with him. As exhilarating as B/M is, Mick can't give Beth a future like Josh can unless he takes her mortality from her.
As exhilarating as B/M is, Mick can't give Beth a future like Josh can unless he takes her mortality from her.
Exactly my issue with the UST. And Beth/Josh was so cute in the first few eps. Besides which, I like the idea of showing a relationship that has to deal with some ups and downs in the show and how they work through it from week to week, over time.
Not too many other shows I've watched have ever really done that with any consistency - charted a relationship through the good and the bad amidst a "main plotline".
I'm watching. It really picked up in quality with ep 4. I love how they always seem to go for high cliche but then sidestepping it at the last turn. It's very enjoyable. The Beth/Mick dynamic could've become really creepy stalkerish but I like them a lot actually. Beth has guts and character, she's not a means to an end for Mick to reconnect to his humanity.
Let me know if you want pointers to comms and/or people who talk Moonlight a lot. There's isn't much in terms of fic on LJ, but Moonlight fans are an enthusiastic and talkative bunch.
I have been watching Moonlight from the beginning and have watched all of the 12 Episodes and i am totally hooked on the show. Because i live in Britain i had to download it every week but it was worth it. At last it is coming to Living tv on Tuesday. I just love Alex he is so Sexy and the story lines are getting better every week the best by far was the last episode it was so exciting. I can't wait for the new episodes starting in April i have to get my Moonlight fix I just hope and pray we get a second season its a great show.
Well, I'm halfway through the season, planning to watch the rest of it this weekend. It's kind of a relief to be watching something that doesn't have a whole lot of fandom looming up behind it.
That's one thing that diminishes my enjoyment of SGA these days - the sheer weight of fandom, all ready to wank about whatever's happened in the show this week...
I've downloaded to episode 8 and I enjoy it a lot. I've gotten busy with school so I haven't watched any more after that - looking forward to it. It definitely got better after the first three episodes.
I love Josef to little itty bitty pieces. He's so snarky and in a such a non-annoying way. He and Mick have such a good dynamic. *puts on teh slash goggles*
Also, Alex O'Loughlin is hawt. I think I've mentioned that before but it's worth saying again.
I've watched one ep of this show. It was the one where Mick (that's the vampire's name, yeah?) found out about this compound that would turn vamps human, and he took it but it didn't last, and his (ex?)wife was involved and things got very wangsty, very quickly. It seemed to me like the whole episode was the vamps (especially Mick) complaining about being a vampire, and how awful immortality is, and oh to be human once again blah blah blah. And he'd only been a vampire for about 50 years? Jeez! Even Lestat took longer than that to commence the emo mope-age.
Somehow, this is all Anne Rice's fault.
Am I to take it that the ep I saw is not typical of the show overall? I might give it a second chance.
Okay, I'll start with the pilot. By now, I should really know better than to jump into the middle of a show. The only time that has ever worked was with ReGenesis.
