Thanks to a friend who has this most awesome connector cable that allows you to link up your old HD to a USB, I am in the process of getting my old stuff off the HD and onto my work computer.
So I haven't lost everything! (Yet. We'll keep hedging our bets until I have it all safely stored.)
Unfortunately, the new compy may not arrive until after I get back from Vietnam. Which could be incredibly awkward if I don't have a computer when I go travelling. Those of you who've met me (and probably those of you who haven't) know that my computer is my Preciouss. It goes where I go and I write just about everything in it. (And don't back it up half often enough. Or, like, ever, which is the cause of my predicament now.)
So, yeah, this could be interesting. Also 'interesting' could be the switch from Windows XP to Windows 8, although perhaps not in the traditionally fannish way of "oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die".
So I am presently transferring my graphics and my music over to the work laptop.
Then I'll move the stories, my personal files, my ebook library, and a couple of programs across, as well as trying to find my Outlook .pst files with all my emails in them. Would be nice to have those again.
*sigh* Anyway, that's a load off. Now I just have to get through the next 90 minutes, in which we have a hockey game. I'm exhausted and I haven't even played!

What I will suggest is getting an account on Dropbox, Box or some other online storage service. I have Dropbox (free version)and it works for me personally as another back up to my computer and an external HD. Other people have preferences and there's plenty to choose from. Having this backup has saved my life more than once when I thought I lost something.

I would have preferred to get WinXP, or even Win7, but we'll see how this works out. I wanted portable for this computer, so we'll see how it works out...

I had XP Pro for a long long time and don't really want to lose it. Unfortunately, nearly impossible to get anymore unless you want to run it on a dog system. :/
