To read a fic labelled with one of my favourite pairings, which - judging by the description - has all the hallmarks of "the female is a dirty bitch for laying hands on the sacred male character who should be with other male character who is described as jealous of the relationship" or not?

I think I just answered my own question.

Incidentally, the 'jealous' character? Does not read as the stereotypically jealous type to me. We've seen him with his exes and his friends and his crushes, and he always comes across as knowing exactly where the lines are drawn and what's acceptable behaviour. He pulls himself back a couple of times, and is always carefully deferential.

...you know, all things considered, I probably wouldn't like most fic about this character: I'd just want to smack authors for making him emo and angsty and out of character.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. There was another story in the same fandom a few weeks ago which was basically a one-sided Sex Pollen story and looked like it was a 'humiliate the female character' scenario.
