The key problem is that Maria Hill is not representative of the target audience as Phil Coulson is - there was no way they were going to let the geeky white guy permanently die in a heroic sacrifice if he could be resurrected to make more money for the franchise.
Maria's a woman who isn't a love interest, isn't presented in-universe as 'pretty', and while being displayed as generally on the side of the heroes, isn't pro-heroes either.
And in the minds of writers everywhere, both in fandom and out, female characters are infinitely dispensable - whether they're killed off, abused/traumatised, or simply shunted aside and ignored in favour of male-centric narratives.
So I'd like to believe that the revolving door of death might be in operation for Maria, but I'm highly cynical.
Oh, God; it's super-possible. I haven't watched the new trailer yet, but this is exactly the kind of stunt the Marvel PTB would pull -- and Whedon is making me fear even more. He loves killing off characters close to the heroes yet not the heroes...

Need a Maria icon. Can you point me?

...I don't know where to get icons these days. If I needed any, I made them - and, frankly, I haven't changed up my icons in ages...
Sorry! Perhaps try some of the Marvel communities on Livejournal? There are still occasional icon posts around there...

So at least if I go on opening night, I get to find out if it sucks as early as possible ....
