Survived first full regular competition hockey game on a day when summer was trying to have its last gasp.

27C was the temp when we started, and nobody had brought sunscreen. I fully expect to be mildly sunburned tomorrow.

We won, 4-3, which is really good when you consider that the score at half-time was 1-3 and we were losing. We'd scored that first goal very early in - I passed it across the goal to the right wing and she angled it in past the goalie. But we lost ground as we got tired, and they scored three times in the remainder of the first half.

We didn't come out hard in the 2nd half, but for some reason their defence opened out a lot: we were getting it into the midfield and then from the midfield up to the forwards a lot more - and once we were in our goal quarter, we angled it around them with short passes, and got it all in.

That's a classic move on this team - passing the ball in the circle to tap it in. We're not The Best Players in our club - we're the second team, who know how to play but can't do it at the same grade that the top team can. So fewer glory hounds (which is a good thing IMO), and a lot more team-work.

I got a goal, then the centre forward got two. We were trying to set her up for a hat trick, but no cigar, alas. I nearly got a second one - it hit the goalpost and bounced off rather than in. D'oh! But it was a good hit and everyone said so. :)

I think one thing that really helps me is that I've played with just about every player on the team, and at all levels of the competition - goalie in the lower grades, field player in the higher one (back when I had the stamina to play two running games of 70 minutes in a day). So I know that Em and Maddie are a touch hesitant to go in for the ball (they're young, and they're getting much better), that Apes can't run but she has a really good eye for solid hits that angle past the defence, that Lessie will run when necessary, and that Shani will notice that I have no-one on me if I just lift my stick in the air during a free hit.

There was one girl who was new to the club, I think; everyone else had played with the club before, although not necessarily on this team. She did well today, and I'm pretty sure I told her so.

It was a good opening to the season, and all the teams in my club won: our firsts team won 1-0, our thirds team won 3-2, so we've had an excellent opening round!

Anyway, I dare say everything is going to hurt tomorrow. However, in the meantime, I'm really going to have to start working on the fitness. A friend offered to go jogging some evenings in her local park, about 10 mins drive from my place. She just wants a quick run-around, which is what I want, and she doesn't want to do it alone, particularly now that the sun sets at 6pm.

And now I'm hungry again... I had dinner when I got home from church a couple of hours ago. Might be that my body needs a bit of extra fuel, thanks to the game.
