It turns out I didn't pay my car registration the last time it came around.

I discovered this when a cop pulled me over this afternoon. In the shopping centre carpark. Believe it or not, that's actually a positive, since I'd be in a great deal more woe if I'd discovered it when I had an accident and found out I wasn't registered.

I'm kind of pissed off at myself. Because it's been more than 3 months since my registration expired, I'm now completely out of registration, which means a special inspection for roadworthiness, and I lose the vanity numberplates I've had for the last twenty-one years. To get them back, I need to pay an additional fee every year from now on, because they changed the law in the early 00s so if you got vanity plates after the law came in, you'd have to pay extra every year to keep them.

I've had those numberplates for over two decades, dammit.

So, that's 2 fines, and the costs of getting it back on the road again (2 inspections, 1 insurance, and registration), and (if I should decide to keep my numberplates) the additional fee.

Which is less than ideal right now given that I'm out of work and Christmas is coming. But it is what it is.

And it's better than being uninsured when having an accident.

On the upside, I doubt I'll ever forget to pay my car registration ever again.

I'm looking at it as a positive: this happened before I injured someone or myself driving an unregistered car.

And the whole 'always remember to pay car rego!' aspect.

It's too late now, but email reminders from RMS and my insurance company have been really useful since they got rid of rego stickers!

My problem is that I've been letting the paperwork build up the last six months. I think I get about six appeals for donations a month from various companies, and it's exhausting. So I put it all in a pile to deal with later, and bills and notices and suchlike end up being missed. Which is not good.

Yeah, all cleared up - it took about 90 minutes of my time and rather more money, though. :(
