I hear you about the writing. Mine has been in a dry spell for a while but for a piece I wrote for a friend's birthday.
As far as pans go, it depends on the type of pan. My cast iron does not get touched by soap and water because I've seasoned it. If I do any sort of wipedown involving water, I might use salt and then oil the pan again. If I end up using baking soda, then it's back to seasoning but not as long as it would take if I used soap.
