Played one game of hockey in goals yesterday and we drew 1-1. I let one through - it was a really solid goal and I didn't get my foot in place in time, so that was on me. But I also stopped about four others, including one where I was basically holding the ball out of the goal with my stick while the attackers were trying to get it in with theirs. Uh. And I might have been swearing at top voice.

I apologised to the attacking players who I swore at, and to the umpires, terribly embarrassed. I think they took it okay. I don't usually get potty mouthed on the field, but my hindbrain took over and decided that it was a good time to bring out all the expletives.

The other game I played was on the field with Team 1. I'm not listed as a player with Team 1, but when they need someone to fill in on the forward line, I've offered both times, and we've won both times. This time the final score was 3-2. It might have been 4-2, but when one of the team did a massive hit into the circle, I swiped at the ball inside the circle, missed it, and it hit the goalie's pad and went in. Which would have been a goal if I'd touched the ball...I just didn't think it touched me, and I said so because that's how I roll, so the umpire didn't allow it. But our coach later said she thought it just swiped me and went in... She might have been right, but I didn't feel it, so I said I didn't touch it in the circle.

Oh well, Brutal honesty for the not-as-big-a-win-as-we-might-have-had.

I think the coach was more cross that the umpire called a defensive hit out after that instead of the attacking short corner that it should have been. Last touch before it crossed the line was their defence, so it should have been ours. I didn't think of that in the aftermath, but now that I think about it, yeah, it should have been our short corner. Ah well.

But that third goal? We got a short corner in the last 2 seconds, when one of the defenders didn't drop back 5m as we took a free hit. (Basically, they did a foul, we get a free hit, the defenders have to stand at least 5m away. If they don't, they can get pulled up. If they keep doing this, and they're doing it near the goal circle, the umpire has the right to call a 'short corner', which is all the attackers against the goalie and four defenders.

Look up 'short corner flick in field hockey'. That's basically what the woman we called up from the defensive line did. And it was BEAUTIFUL.

So we were sodden because we'd played the entire game in a light patter of rain, but we were happy.

And after last year's disappointment of being put in Team 3 (in D-grade) and feeling hurt and inadequate to the game when a lot of other players went up, it's been nice to play with Team 1 (in B-grade) and know that, yes, I can rise to the occasion when necessary. Even if my right big toe joint has been playing up more and more this year. About five years ago, my uncle-doctor diagnosed it as likely early onset rhumatoid arthritis. Not much to be done about it, except stop playing which...no. So I give it really good support while playing and try not to exacerbate it the rest of the time.

I have an appointment with a massage therapist this afternoon. Must remember to wear a mask.

And speaking of mask-wearing: I'm trying to make masks - pretty ones of cotton - with a pocket for a protective insert. The inserts are being made from old "recycled shopping bags" material with a layer of quilting wadding inside them - for warmth and extra protection.

But, boy, is it a bit of sewing. And my brain is not fully in place for sewing just now. *sigh*

Work is still gearing up slowly. I got paid on Friday. One week's pay, which was very nice.

Other than that, it's another day in paradise, with COVID community transmission back on the rise in Sydney and NSW. Four local cases (as in 10km, local area) one in a school, one in a pharmacy, and one in the emergency room of the local hospital. A friend took her baby daughter there that night and was seen to by the employee who tested positive, so she's in quarantine for 14 days. At least the employee was wearing a mask, but...the next month is going to be a tough one.

Sounds like a solid showing in your games! And honestly, who doesn't swear sometimes when playing sports? I think in some it's mandatory. (grin)

Glad to hear you got paid, but very sorry to hear about your friend's exposure to Covid!
