You have provided me with much fun in your Stargate fics, and I still mull over what I read of your original fiction about the woman in historical China, and assuredly would have bought it and read it all if it had been published. I’ve loved seeing your quilting projects, and have traveled vicariously in East Asia and Europe with you. You are lots of fun, you just can’t see it right now.
2020 has been a hard year for everyone I know. Here in America, where it’s been tough since election night in 2016, we sometimes feel like we are hanging on by a thread. Worldwide the economy is hanging on by a thread too, and even the introverts are getting tired of holing up and hunkering down. Major depression is up leaving people feeling down all over the world, and adulting seems weightier and harder every day. 2020 just plain sucks.
I will say that as someone who has been sitting here in America watching out national disaster spew forth in real time, affecting the whole world as we go, because our role and sphere of influence is so large, that finally, finally it is really beginning to look like this Presidency is a sinking ship. When you think of the people that didn’t show up in the pre-election polls in 2016, remember what has changed. It was so expected that Hilary would win that Democratic turnout was lackluster, while early voting numbers show massive Democratic turnout this time. The number of returned ballots powered through last cycle’s numbers a while ago, and is off setting records. Republican turnout was high in 2016 but between them, undecideds, and independents that went for Trump, he lost the popular vote and won a narrow Electoral College victory. Almost no one is undecided now, because he has been so polarizing, and has been spending four years speaking only to his base. He has lost the Bush Republicans, is underwater in many of the battleground states that won him the Electoral College last time around, and an astonishing number of prominent military retired men and National Security types, who are ordinarily strictly apolitical in what they say publicly have come out and said Trump must be voted out. He has lost the youth vote, and is losing the elderly, who are particularly threatened by Covid and don’t like what he is threatening to do to Social Security. I personally think that it is far more likely that folks who have been proud Trump supporters of the less rabid type are afraid to share the dirty little secret that they plan to vote for Biden this time than that there are a bunch of people out there hiding their intention to vote for Trump. I hope Biden wins in an unmistakable and overwhelming landslide, because that will end the nightmare soonest and with the least violence, but I am sitting here awaiting dawn and a new day.
On New Years Eve, let’s all kick this ghastly year to the curb and stomp on it, and using the power of technology that will enable us to be together while separate and safe, have a party so raucous they can hear it in the next galaxy.
