Saturday, I fixed up the espalier frame for my two apples.
Sunday, I met up with a couple of the hockey committee to sort out gifts for Presentation Night on Saturday, vaccuumed the house, mopped the kitchen and dining, then went into my study and finished the top for of the C4quilts, took photos of it and another quilt I'd done a while back, came back in, sat down with a book...and suddenly realised there was blood spattered in a 4m trail from the lounge into the dining room.
Weirdest of all, the blood spatter had not been stepped in. Perfect little drops on the wooden floor, unsmudged.
Both cats seemed sleepy and comfortable, no limbs missing, no apparent yowling or pain.
A quick check of myself showed I was not bleeding, and for a few minutes I felt like I was in a horror or a ghost movie where walls or floors suddenly start bleeding. WHERE HAD THE BLOOD COME FROM? I checked myself over several times I was that freaked out.
Then I checked the cats again, and after about a half-hour of bewildered looking over, I found a few tiny blood spatters on Mal. She'd also started losing her appetite and when she got up and down from her sitting position, it looked like she was doing so very gingerly.
The thing that I was most worried about was that she'd IDK swallowed something sharp and had some kind of internal bleeding.
Cue a trip to vet emergency, where the vet looked at the video I'd taken of the blood, pronounced that it wasn't vomit (phew) and started checking her over for a wound. Finally found it under the right arm after they shaved her, which required sedating her - a couple of fairly deep punctures that had probably done the bleeding - although how she managed to a) bleed without getting it on her, b) bleed without stepping in it, I have no idea. She came home woozy, with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.
We think that she and Smokey had a fight, since we couldn't find anything that indicated how she came to get those injuries. There's a new cat in the neighbourhood and when he came past the back door the other day, Smokey got really aggressive - except that since she couldn't get aggressive with the Big Guy outside the door, she got aggressive with Mal, and only B1's presence managed to stop it.
Anyway, it's a good thing I've been squirrelling away for a cat/chook fund. That was an expensive vet visit.
Came home, ate the Mexican ribs I put together and shoved in the oven before taking Mal to the vet (B2 had come over so she kept and eye on it) with some packet macaroni cheese (it wasn't terrible), and an avocado that I probably could have turned into a salsa-ish kind of thing if I'd had any energy.
Might try to make some coriander lime rice (may need to ask the neighbours for some limes if available). Need to either start trading or using that coriander...
Also have to fry up the chicken livers I defrosted. Garlic and soy sauce/ricewine glazed. Maybe make a pate out of it?

Tomorrow I have the funeral for one of my hockey team. She had cancer a couple of years ago, thought she'd beaten it back and started off the season strong, then relapsed. She died last Saturday. She was a character and a half, and we're going to miss her around the club, as well as in the goals.

Glad the vet found the wounds and hope Mal continues to be ok.
Hope the funeral goes as well as these things can. I'm sorry for your loss.

Quite a few of my hockey club are going - she was a member for years, and goalie for more than one of our teams in the last few years, and actually stood for president this year, only to have the cancer resurgence mid-season. It's really sad.
