It's basically "the Gospels as a TV series" and I'm enjoying it.

When I say "I'm enjoying it" I mean, "I'm enjoying watching the BTS stuff but have not actually watched an episode through yet." (I no longer know if various TV shows and TV show fandoms have scarred me sufficiently that I'm unable to really watch anything without someone else watching it beside me, or if I just struggle to concentrate on things that don't involve my hands anymore.)

I have a lot of feelings about this, almost exclusively positive.

It's really an intersection of two things that don't usually crossover: fandom and my faith. I mean, they influence each other, of course, but they don't ever fuse. But this looks like a show I could get fannish about (although not in a fanfic way) and that hasn't happened in a long time.

The storyline follows Jesus as he starts his ministry and goes through the various lands, but it does it like it's a narrative rather than the MMLJ gospels (which are just the "important" things that were needed to have recorded).

One of the things that I really enjoy is the fact that they go 'off-road' on the gospels - Peter's wife has a name and they have a miscarriage, there are women among the disciples, Matthew is written as on the spectrum. The characters all have backstories, they come from somewhere, they are going somewhere, they want things, they interact with that backstory and those desires in mind. You get a better idea of them as human beings, not just names in the gospels.

Oh, and they're a group; they have in-jokes, they have familial relationships, one of the male disciples is half in love with one of the female disciples, they exasperate each other, and occasionally get into 'boofs' which isn't fists but is certainly arguments and disagreements.

I love it. I love it so much.

I also love it because the Jesus of The Chosen is...kind. Sure, "in very nature God" and all that, but you see the next line "did not consider equality with God something to show off" in this Jesus. He does, but he does quietly. He makes jokes with his friends, he loves his mama, he corrects people with gentleness, and when he heals people he asks them to look at him so they can see him seeing them. IDK. I've watched the "video bible re-enactments" before and they were perfectly fine, just...stiff? Made for showing at Sunday church. This one is made for sitting down on the couch to watch with friends. Even friends who don't have the same faith, who just want some enjoyable storytelling and a good narrative.

I can, however, safely say that I won't be writing or reading fanfic for this series!
(Even if one of my favourite fanfics is a Christian Bible fanfic: She Will Place on Your Head a Graceful Garland; She Will Bestow on You a Beautiful Crown - King's wives; king's sons.)

Anyway, there are obviously quite a few people who don't like it to start with.

But also, there's been a kerfuffle about someone employed on the set hanging a pride flag from their equipment. The kerfuffle has not been from the showrunners, the crew, or the cast, who have a view of "if you're good at your job and you don't mind being here, by all means, we're glad to have you working with us". They didn't care about the pride flag. From the sound of it, they consider it the equivalent of wearing a cross, and some of the actors hold to affirming theology and have been pointing out that this crewmember can wave a pride flag and also be a Christian.

*FWOOM*

It's overwhelmingly contentious of course, as religious conservatives inevitably are when deciding they're "going to take a stand", which seems to not just mean "this is my line, I'm not going to cross it" but "this is my line, and everyone I see, encounter, purchase from, converse with, admire, and watch must not cross it".

At any rate, I hear one of the major networks has bought The Chosen, which has produced four seasons so far and I'm not sure how they're going to do the "backend" because they envisioned it being seven or eight seasons, so...I haven't got proper thoughts on this right now. I might try to parse it out later. We'll see.

I better post this. I'll probably have more things to post about tomorrow and Monday.

I did organise brunch with church friends on Monday, though we're ending up at someone's house because a lot of the cafes are closed. (I didn't think that one through very well.)

Ngl I'll probably never watch this show, but everyone being a fleshed-out character does sound appealing!

It got bought by the CW over here (which is now owned by Nextstar after Warner and Paramount sold off their stakes).

I might get around to checking it out.
