All too many people forget that "My country right or wrong" is only the first half of the saying. It's "My country, right or wrong; if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right."
All too many people forget that "My country right or wrong" is only the first half of the saying. It's "My country, right or wrong; if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right."
I'd only ever seen "My country, right or wrong", which I thought was jingoistic, nationalistic, nasty, and which I utterly disagreed with.
I have always liked E.M. Forster, "If I had to choose between betraying my country and betraying my friend, I hope I should have the guts to betray my country"
which I always interpreted in the light of laws that criminalised being gay or socialist or trade unionist,
and also in the light of the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) that persecuted communists, socialists, gay people, and also anyone who'd ever been friends with them or gone to a party they had thrown.

Like, what is
"I want my country to be less racist"
"I want my country to be better on the environment"
"I want my country to have less social inequality"
if not a form of love?
Because you're wanting better things for your country, and for everyone who lives there.
