If I might suggest... Anne Bishop is great at writing character tropes - rather the way that the SGA writers are great at writing character tropes.
But when you take the characters beyond their tropes...possibility! Stories! Intrigue! Intricacy!
I've noticed that I tend to set up my John/Teyla stories within a team setting - partly because that's a large part of how I perceive them, partly because I love the team, but it's hard to shoehorn them in with some of the other AUs.
