Went to suggest ideas for garden design yesterday afternoon as part of my permaculture group. Went through a bunch of thoughts and ideas and brainstorms, and then stepped over a 'garden' bed (full of weeds right now; she's been taking the time to observe) and peered into the neighbour's yard.

1. realised she had a passionfruit
2. realised she had garden beds
3. realised she was growing certain vegies in the MIDDLE OF WINTER and they were SURVIVING.

We still made our suggestions, but recommended that the member of our group find out the house and get to know the owners! What a garden!

This morning, I had another teenaged workman come by to help me out with a project. 15 years old (vs. the 17 year old kid from church), I paid him $20 an hour and he helped for 2.5 hours. We basically started off by redoing the apple espalier which basically began rotting at the base. We got the post (now shortened) cemented in, and he's coming back on Friday to help out again.

1. Get the crossbar to the espalier in place.
2. rewire the espalier.
3. move the woodchips from the driveway to the back paths
4. trim the trees/trim the branches/chip the branches
5. make a compost

I don't know if I'll make it through all of them, but might as well give it a decent try!

We played our first losing game of hockey this evening. Against a team that is probably the closest to being our equal in the competition. It was a typical game for them - and for us against them. A lot of grumpy, not terribly nice playing. A lot of argy-bargy and mouthy talk back. And complaining at the end.

It was just a 1-0 loss, and we really missed our strongest (and calmest) defence, who took herself out of the game just this afternoon. This was a game when we needed her in the middle directing things. We have some good midfield defenders without her, but J's cool calculation centres in the team in a way that really cements our mindset.

Also: we have 15 players - we're going to end up with 16 when one of our players come back. That means we have 4-5 subs in a game which is a lot of substituting on and off throughout the game.

One of the reasons we have so many players is partly because Team 1 is in A-grade, and even the players who are capable of playing in that grade, with that team, didn't want to play that grade. It's a fair call, because we're in this for fun and playing at a grade that requires more 'stretch' than the body can comfortably manage week after week after week... It's not good.

Anyway. We lost. I think we were pretty gracious about it, but they were rather ungracious about winning. Ah well. They're not a particularly nice team - a few rather bitchy people spoiling the lot.

Reset, take a week off (it's public school holidays for the next fortnight, which means we don't play a game in the middle of the season), and come back to play against a team who should be an easy-ish win. And I'll probably be in goals.

And now it's time to get a wash, wash my hair, dry it, and go to bed. WHEW.

I'm glad you found a good helper!

Sorry to hear that the opposing hockey team wasn't fun to play with.
