Election called today, for 3rd of May. That's five weeks away.
And now the push starts.
A sigificant Sydney paper mentioned our electorate as one where there's possibility in play. This could work for us or against us (depending on how much people believe change could happen, and on how much people listen to Murdoch media lies).
Electorates matter a lot more in Australia. We'll end up with one party or the other in governmental power depending on how many electorates they manage to win.
And then, if neither party has enough electorates, they have to speak with the independent members, who can and will make deals based on what their constituency wants. And the last time Australia had a minority government - a proper "coalition" of groups with differing interests working together - they got a metric fuckton of policy passed. Not all of it was good, I'll be honest, but shit got done.
Not to mention that if we flip our electorate...well, at the least, it shows it can be done. Even if we flip back next time, they'll never take us for granted again.
I think we have a real chance. There's a lot of people who've been slowly detaching from our conservative MP, who doesn't really live here and only ever votes with his party except for the one time when it mattered - and even then we lost.
Anyway, it's going to be a small and quiet revolution I think. I've put my corflute out (yard sign), and I've chatted to a friend about putting one up in her yard but she needs to check with the husband. I've spoken to a woman down the road about voting for the independent... The trickiest part is persuading people that change is possible. So many people are burned, and yes, with good reason. But - like Luke Skywalker, on his way to confront Darth Vader - I have to try.
I need to talk to the social media manager for the indie, though. I have an idea for a 30 second video to the tune of Avril Lavigne's Girlfriend (I'm not sure if that's allowed, surely there's some flexibility for social media?)
So now we're bracing for impact. It'll be an uphill slog, because the current MP has all the emails, all the funding, all the media, all the name recognition.
But all we need is enough people to say "let's see a bit of change".
