Challenge #2: Pets of Fandom
Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!
Cat in my icon: Nyara. Dead since 2011, she was my first cat as an adult. I attribute the Death Of A Modem to her - the modem she's resting on in the icon, which she insisted on sleeping on because it was warm and I think it just got smothered in the end.
Named for the Changechild character in Mercedes Lackey's Winds series of Valdemar, she was stand-offish when it came to pats, but snuggly when it came to snoozing in bed next to me.
About a year after she died, I got Maladicta and Smokey.
Maladicta:
Named for the Terry Pratchett character in Monstrous Regiment because at first her mother's owner didn't know her gender, and she was initially named 'Malcolm' by the farmer. We thought 'Maladicta' was a hilarious and appropriate renaming.
Although a fannish friend from the days of Firefly asked "Mal? A browncoat? Really?"
Smokey on the other hand is just uninventively named.
The chickens are a whole saga in and of themselves.
They're mostly named for Chinese chicken dishes:
Hainan (leghorn) and Honey Soy (ISA brown) - "the original recipe" - deceased
Tja-Tse (hyline) and Salt-and-Pepper (Sussex) - "the new Shanghai" - deceased
Cold Dish (leghorn cross) and Shandong (ISA brown) - "the banquet" - deceased
Goongbao (wyandotte) and Siyao (barnavelda) - "the OG babies" - still alive
Carambah and Chouqette (quambys) - "the golden babies" - deceased
Daofu (white, probably leghorn cross) and Haamyu (black, probably Australorp cross)- "the posties" - deceased
Gladys Berechicklian and Dr Kerry Chant (ISA browns) - "the lockdown ladies" - Gladys is still alive, Dr Kerry is deceased
We've had rather a bad couple of years with the chickens, tbh.
At the start of last year, we had five chickens. Various maladies and situations have reduced us to three. Dr. Kerry died the day I left to go overseas, and the most recent and most traumatic loss was that of Carambah, earlier this week, who got mauled by a doggie from down the road. Broken wing, bites about the head, we got her to the vet and had her put down. It was really bad.
The elderly neighbour whose dog it was paid for the vet, but the sistren are furious that her young and enthusastic dogs just keep getting out and traumatising our chickens! And I'm not exactly happy about it either.

And then there's the lemming, Daniel, who has accompanied me through multiple continents, on various trips, and is at least 20 years old. He might be 22 or 23 now. Still travels with me when I go overseas as you can see in this pic of him on a railing at a Georgian rapids in 2025.
Daniel is probably the most fannish of my animals, even if he is stuffed. He's named for Daniel Jackson of Stargate SG-1 fame.

Rodney was reminded of why he'd never much liked the military. Other than Samantha Carter, of course. The great love of his life, who'd never know how ignominiously he'd died, gnawed to death by an overenthusiastic kitten.

Cats were once worshipped as gods. They have never forgotten this.
The Pursuit of Phenomenally Unlikely Payoffs
MCU, Hogwarts crossover, various characters
In his first year at the Roswell School of Magic, Clint discovered he was really good at Transfiguration. He had the matchstick into the needle by the end of the first lesson. Unfortunately, it kind of went downhill from there.
Note on that last one: the animals are marginal to the plot. They have...familiars. Or whatever it is that the magical world of HP has. I've forgotten now.
