You know that would open a whole can of worms on 'OMG we is being oppressed!!!!eleventy!' I'd love to tell these people that yes, they have the freedom of speech - including the freedom to speak elsewhere...
Look, I understand being discontented with the show. Hello, I ranted a goodly portion of my way through S3, and right now, my first comment and judgement basis on any episode of S4 is whether or not Teyla's in it.
So, yeah, I understand about "things that I don't like about the show" or "things I'd do otherwise" or "things that I think should have happened differently".
But in the end, it's pretty much not my show. In the end, you build a bridge and you get over it.
The Earth logic doesn't tend to be very strong over at GW - particularly in the anti-threads. Practicality? Pragmatism? Real life issues? No, it's all about precisely what I want and why aren't I getting it?
I've decided that GW has only two modes: 'bitch' and 'squee'.
Forget the boys-or at least McKay/Sheppard-its all about Teyla running away with her sexy leathered-up girlfriend, meh. And Ronon/Beckett, because you know that in one of the many AU's out there Ronon/Carson are having fabulous kinky sex.
I wish I could write a thesis about entitlement issues and fandom. But then that would require that I study such things up close and personal, and that would not fun.
Let them bitch, let them act like spoilt brats, because frankly, in spite of what TPTB have done and how they've treated the actors, lack of character story lines/plot for Teyla and Ronon...and Ford, not allowing us to see/hear from Aiden again, this season for both Teyla and Ronon has been pretty good.
Granted, they should have focused on them (and Weir) during all the seasons, and not just focus on McKay and Sheppard, but these are the reasons why they've kept Teyla/Rachel not just because she's eye candy *eyeroll* I love Torri/Weir, but, what we've seen Teyla do this season, Weir could not have managed, it isn't in her, unlike Teyla, Elizabeth was not born and raised a fighter.
People will always think Teyla/Rachel and Ronon/Jason are there just for their looks, let them, because clearly they are not watching the show, clearly they fail to see that both Ronon and Teyla are valuable.
I don't think anyone is ever 100% content with their favourite show. If anyone ever told me they were I'd start wondering what is wrong with them. We all have our things we'd change, have done differently and mostly things that irritate the crap out of us.
But then, 'normal' people accept that they can wax lyrical about what they'd do until bears stopped shitting in the woods and it would change nothing.
We both know, and have said this before, that people like this don't get over it because they get a kick out of ruining it for the people who are still invested in a show. It's sad really. I mean, if you don't like something anymore, for fuck sake, get a new hobby.
You know, I read every day in our 'other' fandom, and while I have come across commentary on things people don't like, I've never come across the same level of entitlement that certain sections of SGA fandom seem to have regarding the show.
No wonder fandom_wank had loads of people with icons referring to it as Stargate Wanklantis...
Granted, they should have focused on them (and Weir) during all the seasons
Damn straight! *sighs*
I'm sorry for Torri - the character of Elizabeth-as-city-negotiator/administrator didn't really have anywhere to go after they established that every episode of the show was either about: a) something threatening to explode; or b) exploding something to save the city.
They could have rejigged the Stargate focus in Pegasus to be more about diplomacy and balancing Earth in the Pegasus galaxy, which would have used Elizabeth and Teyla considerably better and set both up for future seasons...but they didn't and we have to live with it.
I've never been in a fandom that wasn't, eventually, wanktastic, but I guess the level of wankiness does vary. I get so quickly annoyed by it that any wankiness seems enormously wanky. :P Haven't checked out CSI:NY fandom yet, though....
Yes, but see, Harry Potter fans may have a few specific quibbles with certain things, but they still like Harry Potter. One SW BNF once made a--very convincing--case that all true SW fans hate SW, at heart. Certainly, George Lucas is routinely villified as a matter of course for just about everything, in ways that I've never heard JKR attacked. Of course, I've only dabbled in the fringes of HP fandom, so it could just be that I don't know much about it.
You've never heard JKR attacked?! For one sample (just choosing the first instance to come to mind), look up Harmony or the Harmoniums. One of the more extreme cases, but their attitudes in weaker forms (or stronger) have cropped up in many discussions/threads/etc.
Yes, but I've also heard HP fans say nice things about her with no qualifications. I have never once heard a really serious SW fan say anything nice about GL without serious qualifications.
Okay, I will grant that she isn't universally hated by any stretch, but there are definite pockets who love HP, but hate JK or at least really wish she would just shut already (or that she had written the books differently) and let her story stand.

Yeah, I don't bother to read the message boards. Just the spoilers over there.

And so, Joe Mallozzi sweeps up the Antis into his arms, climbs the long staircase up to the balcony and drops them off into the sea far below.
'Frankly, my dear,' he says, 'I don't give a damn.'

Considering CSI:NY is also on its fourth, I've seen surprisingly little sign of wank. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places... :oP
