If anything, Joe sometimes plays it as unrequited, though depending on your perspective that could just be not wanting to share his "family". But then, fandom is not really known for logic or (in some quarters) acknowledging different opinions of the text/show. But, hey... Or, more specifically, I can't see John and Rodney getting an act together emotionally without self-destructing. They're both emotional/psychological black holes, and they really needs something with some emotional solidity to latch onto, or they're toast, IMO.
