tielan: four lemming toys at the grand canyon (travel)
Tuesday, May 24th, 2011 07:51 am
I probably should have typed this up before I got online, it’ll just waste valuable internet time.

Still alive, still sailing, still sick. Kind of tired, mostly bcos the ship rocks gently and partly because my roomie snores. Have earplugs, not using them.

Onto the Danube now (Donau river) and getting off to see Passau this morning, Linz this evening. Vienna tomorrow night.

I was going to see someone in Vienna - I forget who. If you’re still interested, drop me a comment pronto and I’ll arrange to call/meet up!

We're cruising down the Donau this afternoon, between Passau (lovely little historical town) and Linz. we're supposed to put up in Linz by 5pm, and then stay on board until 7pm for dinner until 9pm and then go out after 9. I think that my family and several others on the ship are going to skip dinner and head straight out to Linz for some sightseeing and local food.

I'm in the 'library' at the rear of the ship all by myself, which is good. Peaceful and good for writing. The down side is that the engines are directly below, so there's this constant hum of noise.

Writing is happening a bit more now. We've had a few half-days of cruising down the Donau (Danube) so I get think time and write-time and it's not too bad. Mostly finishing short things: I really want to complete a longer, plotty fic. And get hold of some show downloads while I have the time... Or maybe just wait until I get home?

One of the things about being on this trip is that you get way out of touch with the rest of the world and what's going on. FOr instance? Missouri? Everything okay out there? And has the icelandic volcano blown its load again? Internet is limited to the occasional connection, and so expensive that all there's time to do is check the mail and post an update - no time for news sites. And even then, there's no guarantee that you'll get a connection to the internet, even if the signal is strong.

Still, it's marvellously relaxing to just sail down the river, surrounded by green, tree-filled hills, and passing tiny villages basking on the (green) Danube.
