Memorial dinner for friend M. He died a couple of years ago, but around the anniversary of his death, his widow goes down to the local pub/club where there's a "meat raffle" with friends and has dinner.
A meat raffle, for the unintiated, is where a local butcher donates one or several meat trays to a sporting club or organisation, and tickets are sold to raffle off the tray(s). It's a thing in several pubs/clubs around these parts, and fun to go in, buy a handful of tickets and try your luck. It's always a fun thing to do: dinner with friends and a little punt for fun.
This is the club where we usually go for Trivia Nights on Thursdays, but apparently on Friday nights...they have karaoke, starting from 8pm.
We came in, bought our dinner, bought tickets for the raffle. Our table of about 10 households won at least 5 meat-trays, and one other prize!
...and once the raffle ended...the karaoke started up.
We chatted for a while with it in the background. There was no intent to do karaoke, but...well, one of our number went in for it...and then several others of us did, and then we went in to watch and wait for our performance to come up and sang with the songs we knew and shrugged at the ones we didn't...
Some of our group headed out rather than sit around, but others stuck in for it, and when they played music in between the breaks, some of us danced. I dragged a couple of women out on the dance floor just because I like to dance and they looked like they wanted to (and they did come). We're all very self-conscious, but I'm getting better at being less so. And I sang with two other women: Thank You For The Music by ABBA. Which I realised once I was up there, I didn't know the verses, only the chorus. OOPS.
We winged it, and we did pretty well.
One friend sang a solo, and I was going to, but I couldn't find anything to sing. It's not that I don't know the words, it's that some of the lyrics are just...not what I want to be singing anywhere but in the car by myself! As another friend (who refused to sing, citing his lack of glasses as inusfificent to allow him to read the words) pointed out, he'd probably end up singing Disney songs. Which...not a bad idea!
NEXT TIME, GADGET.
Anyway, it was a good night, if exhausting, and by the end of it I was WIRED. So I didn't get to sleep until at least 12:30 and woke up at 6pm. I'm now tired. (I also did quite a bit of stuff in the garden, with the hired help, who was, well, teenaged clueless but generally helpful...
Tomorrow is a quiet day. Then Monday I have to decide if I'm going to go boating or not. I think I might.
