I want the context to be in the broader set of Atlantis and amidst the other characters - as though this is a snapshot from a segment of someone's life, and not just a romance novel where the sole purpose is that the two people come together.
I quite like that approach myself. Don't get me wrong. I'll read straight up ship fic and I'll like it, but when the ship is shown as only one part of their lives, albeit an important part, it makes the characters seem more real and well rounded. I'm excited to read what you're doing!
