One of my RL friends made me sit down and watch her box set of S1 of Stargate Atlantis one day because it was "really good!" and she needed someone to squee over it with. I was skeptical because I'd seen the movies on the SciFi channel programming before and I knew their what their level of production was. I was convinced that it was not going to be good. I was pleasantly surprised. It took me a bit to get into SGA S1 because my science fiction experience until then had been limited to Star Wars and whatever super hero movies I could get my hands on, but by the time we got to The Storm/The Eye I was hooked. To this day, those two remain my favorite episodes of the series. I really just enjoyed the concept of the first season and the team dynamic throughout the other ones, especially when Ronon got involved.
I got into SGA right when S3 started airing so I was a little late to the game. I was convinced that it was going to be one of my "summer fandoms" - one of those fandoms you crawl into and lurk around for three months before heading back to your "real" fandom (which at that time was Harry Potter for me). But then I discovered that SGA fandom had a huge supply of good fic and that there was plenty for me to read, enjoy and be inspired by. I think the point I realized that it was my crack when I actually ended up becoming very productive and getting involved with the rest of fandom for once. In Harry Potter, I never interacted with any of the fans off of message boards or FFnet but here I was able to meet new people and actually become friends with them, and I liked that a lot.
