The idea that he (Yan) was a different person from John was something I only gave some surface agreement too because so much of John is closed off from the audience as well as his team.
But, there was the idea that in the story, both versions of our main character had different internal realities.
In Yan, I kept looking for the man who hung out with a bunch of Ancients who wanted to ascend. I kept looking for John as I understand him, and then, I was looking for John as Teyla-in-this-story knew him (among others, like Ronon and Rodney).
