Definitely one of the most exciting eps I've yet seen.
I'm coming to love this show.
I love Derek's continued disbelief in Cameron and the persistent question as to whether she's going to turn on them or not. I love that Sarah doesn't hesitate to step in when she thinks Derek's crossed the line; and I love that she yanks back the curtain while he's showering but doesn't check him out at all.
I love that John shows signs of the leader he's going to be, and how there's a kind of bond between him and the machines he reprograms - that they're not 'just' machines to him the way they are to Derek - that they're both tools and individuals to him. And yes, the...well...I guess it's tenderness...he shows to Cameron in his own way - awesome.
And Cameron is great - just that little bit off-kilter, out-of-whack, and a little too coldly inhuman for humanity.
This is good sci-fi writing: humanity and inhumanity, the questions of what defines us and how we define ourselves... I love it. It's like BSG, only without the dwama llamas. BSG has the element of space opera to it that makes it difficult for me to watch; T:SCC is just...wow. It's the right mix of action, character interaction, plot development, and mystery to really get me in.
Interestingly, I'm feeling the urge to write bits and pieces - character thoughts for the moment, although I'm hoping the interactions will come later. Usually, though, the stuff I enjoy watching is the stuff that I struggle to write. I liked SGA, but there was always the "oh, no, what are they going to do this week that I'm going to flinch at" fear. With Bones and T:SCC and BSG and so many other shows, there isn't a 'flinch moment', but I just can't seem to write for them.
Maybe I've yet to find a character I can write for in these fandoms? I liked Teyla because she was all the things a woman could be, without Earth limitations on her. Which is probably why nobody can write her: we tend to like our women codified.
No 'ship, perhaps - unless I want to go Sarah/Derek or John/Cameron...both of which have their icks, although the question of some of the Terminator models having an 'advanced infiltration' function presents rather freaky human-robot relational possibilities. Weirdly enough, I can accept human/Cylon relationships easier - perhaps because the Cylons are cleverer at infiltration, their plots are deeper, and they are genetically (genetically?) compatible with humans.
I wonder if they've bothered to try to explain how Sharon managed to give birth to a baby. And how Tyrol managed to sire a baby on Cally. (I think that might be a BSG spoiler.) NOTE: I haven't seen the end of S3, but I saw a skerrick of an article - the one with the pic of The Last Supper and the various characters from the show?
Anyway, I might watch 1.09 tomorrow if I get the chance. Not sure I'll have the chance, though - going out to dinner with
anr whom I haven't seen in about four years now, although she lives 10 mins down the road from me.
Note: the cut above also contains a late S3 BSG spoiler on Who Is A Cylon. For what it's worth.
And I need more Sarah Connor Chronicles icons than just Summer Glau.
