Actually, prehistoric peoples didn't live in caves, because for the most part caves are cold, damp, dark, and generally icky. They occasionally used them for ceremonial purposes (which is why you find paintings in there, and ceremonial items, but not the ordinary detritus of places where people live regularly).

So they would bop them over the head and take them back to their campground, instead.
