cala_jane who wanted Teyla/Lorne with the prompt 'warrior'. I'm afraid it's not exactly lovin' for Lorne, but it's the start of a series of Teyla/Lorne vignettes a beautiful friendship.
Not Her Way
She is accustomed to the interest of men. Sometimes she is interested in return, although it is not her way to show it.
In Atlantis, there are many men, and all of them fascinating in their own ways. From John Sheppard to Radek Zelenka, there is something intriguing about the men of Earth - so Teyla thinks in the privacy of her thoughts.
But until Major Lorne arrives in Atlantis, Teyla is mostly immune to them.
If there is any man she feels most attracted to before the Atlanteans make contact with Earth, it is John Sheppard with his inclusiveness and easy charm. However, he is her foremost ally in Atlantis, and Teyla is not willing to jeopardise that partnership with this attraction.
There is nothing dangerous in her attraction to Major Lorne, nothing that need concern her.
And she is attracted.
He catches her eye during a sparring session with the marines. She has arrived early for her sparring session with Colonel Sheppard, and finds the gym already occupied by a number of men, sparring. They are dressed in the outfits commonly worn by the marines while sparring - loose trousers with flexible waistlines, and what she heard someone refer to as 'wifebeaters' although the sleeveless, scoop-necked top has little to do with either wives or beating that Teyla can see.
Major Lorne - although she does not know his name then - matches off again his opponent, a half-smile on his face as they circle.
Teyla takes note of his gait, the way he moves. There's a cunning there that she has seen in several of the newcomers from Earth, a shifting of his weight that speaks of full familiarity with his body and the muscles that control it. He is built stocky in the chest and muscular in the limbs, and she admires the play of light across sweat-stroked skin and nods to herself as he keeps his weight central and low.
The other man - also newly-arrived in the city - lashes out with his fists, and the Major dodges and connects a solid blow to the other man's ribcage.
She recognises the manner in which he fights - a brutally efficient style more commonly employed by brawlers on a dozen planets through Pegasus. It carries little of the lithe grace of her own staff-sparring, but is effective in other situations.
"They're pretty good, aren't they?" Colonel Sheppard comes up beside her, his hands on his hips as he waits for this fight to end.
"Do you know them?" She asks, curious.
"The redhead is Lance-Corporal John Cage, British, I think. Or maybe Australian." The Colonel frowns a little for a moment, then indicates the other man. "The other guy is Major Mark Lorne, Air Force, like me." He glances sideways at her with a slight grin, taking a moment of indulgent pride in his training - as well he might.
Teyla flashes him a brief smile, then returns to her contemplation of the fighters. Another warrior, then - a fighter.
When the bout is finished - with the Lance-Corporal conceding defeat good-naturedly - Sheppard introduces her to the newcomers. She can tell by their expressions that they know who she is - they would have heard about her from either the reports or the other personnel in Atlantis. She can tell they are interested in her - there are few men in the city who do not show an initial basic interest. She can tell which of them believe she is sexually involved with Colonel Sheppard - it is in the way they glance from her to her companion and the knowing look in their eyes.
Major Mark Lorne, Air Force, is of the first and second groups, but not the third.
"Ma'am," he says, with a smile that is easy and frank and interested. "Pleased to meet you."
Teyla is accustomed to the interest of men. Sometimes, she is interested in return, although it is not her way to show it.
This time, she thinks, it might be worth the showing.
