My artwork for the SGA Reverse Bang:

The Connection

And [livejournal.com profile] kariesue wrote fic for it! Epic longfic! :)

Title: The Connection
Author: [personal profile] kariesue
Rating: Mature
Pairing: John/Teyla
Warning: (for fic) sexual situations
Word Count: ~37,500
Summary: John's bout with the Iratus retro-virus leaves him with some residual and unusual side effects.

Watching John sitting in the Antarctica chair for the first time, I'm reminded of one of my favourite scenes from the upcoming book "The Furies" by Jo Graham and a quote from John about how he uses the Ancient tech so easily: "And I totally let the city top."

*gurgles*

I hope they didn't have to take that line out.

Incidentally, "The Furies" is due out in late June - plenty of everyone, but the major agents in the storyline are Teyla and Sam and Jennifer. John spends a lot of time in prisons on his knees, Ronon has to be diplomatic, and Rodney is wonderfully cunning.

Rewatching this is a little heartbreaking. Ford! Peter! Sumner! Weir! They're so young! They're so innocent! So much hope!

(Ford just threw himself through the wormhole. OH FORD. And the lights are coming on of their own accord! And O'Neill just rolled a bottle of champers through the Stargate!)

...it's actually a little distracting, trying to work and listening to this at the same time.

But they're just about to meet Teyla!!

Someone wrote a remix of my story: Untold Things!

Unasked Things (The Questions We Don't Answer Remix)
Sanctuary: Helen, Kate, with some Henry, Will, and Big Guy.
I'm so glad that this is from Helen's POV, considering Kate and her probable history, the things she sees but doesn't ask about, knowing there's only so much she can do.

--

Forty Years And Eight Pounds:
Stargate Atlantis: John, Teyla, Ronon, Rodney, Lorne, angst, team, family.
An aching look at John and his need for contact.

Fade Away (It's Just A Kiss Away Remix)
Stargate Atlantis: John, Teyla, John/Teyla, post-Submersion
John and the Iratus, Teyla and the Wraith Queen - learning not to grieve what she is, striving to be a better man.

Dead End Detour (Wrong Turning Remix)
Angel: Faith, Angel, and the Watcher's Council, up to S5.
Haunting and terrible and so sad, and yet...there's still a terrible rightness about it.

--

And confession time: I wrote two Remixes (one was a pinch-hit) and two Remix Madness fics.

I'm curious: can you guess which ones they were?

I'll write a ficlet for the first person who guesses the Pinch Hit or the Remix Madness fics. (I'm not allowing my Remix Assignment, because my f-list would be able to find it easily based on the fact that I asked for beta for a very specific set of characters.)

So, I got a remix story and it is awesome! Let there be joy!

Making a Sanctuary a Home (Finding Home remix): a remix of my story of the same name, only from Kate's POV and with lots of wonderful interaction with Team Sanctuary!

I think I know who the writer was, too. And I generally suck at guessing authors.

--

A few recs while browsing this morning:

Court Etiquette
Justice League, Hippolyta, Flash, Alfred, Batman, Wonderwoman, Batman/Wonder Woman.
Funny and serious and a little angsty by turns, a great little piece for the humour and characterisation, with a nice little 'turning the tables' moment at the end.

Ripples In A Pond (The More Things Change Remix)
Stargate Atlantis, Teyla, John, Ronon, Rodney, team.
This is basically "d'awww!" fic. Squishy and team-y and adorable then and now.

Eight Takes on Cameron Mitchell, Air Force Officer in Exile
SG1, Cameron, John, Sam, Daniel, assorted original characters.
Set in the Continuum AU, assorted people's thoughts on Cam Mitchell and his developing relationship with John.

--

For Remix this year, I did one Assignment, one Pinch-hit, and one Madness. I have half of a second Madness...only to follow it to its logical conclusion is going to get messy.

Oh, waitaminnit! *lightbulb goes on*

Now the question: can I do it before the Madness deadline?

I'm not very good with trilogies.

The ones I write, that is. I always get to the end of Part II and then never finish Part III.

it's like a graveyard of half-finished trilogies behind me )

"No, I cannot put up the shield! It's snow, not an alien invasion! Do you think we have the power to run the shield just because you don't want to get your feet wet? Yes, I am a Canadian!"

A review of SGA Legacy: Homecoming by [livejournal.com profile] settiai that says it much better than I ever could!

No spoilers, so if you want to check out what the books are about, she's given enough for you to get a feel for the bits and pieces taking place, without giving away the entirety of the plot.

I'll post some of my own impressions once I get the book (it may very well be languishing in the mailbox up on the street - we haven't collected the mail in two days now) and read it through properly instead of piecemeal. But [personal profile] settiai's review is good for the no-longer-in-SGA fans who are wondering if they should.

(I say you should, but you might want to hear it from someone who isn't me...)

[community profile] sga_legacy/[livejournal.com profile] sga_legacy

A new comm for discussion/conversation about the new Stargate Atlantis Legacy series written by Melissa Scott, Amy Griswold, and Jo Graham, and being published by Fandemonium Books.

I was going to make a big fancy banner for it, but, um, that time thingy got away from me amidst all the stuff I have due. (WRITE THE THINGS! WRITE ALL THE THINGS!)

[personal profile] sholio and I are co-mods, and with Death Game already out and the first book of the series 'Homecoming' shipping, we figured it was a good time/place to put this up for general discussion of all the threads and spoilers and whatnot in the books and series.

Starting with a discussion on Death Game. (I don't have the LJ link at this precise moment, although I can update this post if someone posts me the link on my DW journal: I can't see LJ from work.)

You have seen Old Spice Grover, haven't you? HAVEN'T YOU? ("I am on a horse!" "Moo." "...Cow.")

Search "smell like a monster" on YouTube!

I'm not sure when (if?) Astonishing Persistence: Future Indefinite will be finished. There are about 6-10K of words still to write in interludes in the middle of the story and...I've just got it stuck in my head that the story isn't good enough. My betas are wonderful, encouraging people who've told me otherwise, but I can't turn off the little critic in my head that disagrees with them.

--

Apparently there is a Bedchel Test Fic-A-Thon which sounds awesome of awesomes except that I have too many things going already and I learned my lesson from the winter months of Three Big Bangs And A Tielan Funeral and will never sign up for that much stuff again. But I know folks on my f-list will be interested!

Also, have you signed up for [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa? (Can you still do so?)

There was something else I was going to pimp. Oh, for the John/Teyla fans, [livejournal.com profile] sga_beya is running...a lot of little bits and pieces - discussions and fic challenges and Christmas secret santa thingies. I'm too busy to keep up, I'm afraid, but it's a good place to go and dabble a bit in John/Teyla fandom.

So, [livejournal.com profile] jo_graham has put up another set of character thoughts up for the SGA Legacy book series - this time about John.

I recommend reading it, even if you don't plan to read the books. It's just such a complex character profile of John, an indication of how much care Jo, Melissa, and Amy have taken with these characters and how their story arcs work, the things they face, the parts that make up the whole.

The previous character studies are Radek, Teyla, Todd, and Sam (who seems to have very few supporters in SGA fandom, which is a real pity, because she has some really good storylines in Legacy - as a big Sam-fan, I'm really happy with where the storyline takes her and with the stuff that Jo discusses in the post: her vocation and her choices).

One thing that really hit me while I was reading the drafts of these novels was just how feminist the stories are. )

Incidentally: Death Game by Jo Graham is out sometime in the next couple of weeks. I can't remember if I've got it pre-ordered on Amazon. The ridiculous thing with me and Amazon is that I usually end up paying $50 in books and $95 in postage. Which is just sad and painful on top of 'expensive' and 'almost more trouble than it's worth'. Unfortunately, it's really the only way I'm going to get a whole lot of these books since they're only sold at Galaxy bookshop in the city...

*grumps at ridiculous postage prices from the US*

I know that [personal profile] astridv/[livejournal.com profile] astridv is excited about it (DW | LJ). But that's the only positive public endorsement I've seen.

So I'm looking for links: have you seen or noticed any other people who've posted publically about being interested/excited about the possibility of the SGA: Legacy books, either on LJ or DreamWidth?

Someone saying they're excited, interested, intrigued, thrilled by the prospect? Link me!

[livejournal.com profile] jo_graham has another meta about Legacy up at her journal.

This one's about the lack of reset button and what it meant for the writers of the series and where they've taken the story arcs. (Specifically, they mention Ronon, so the Ronon-fans should probably go over and take a gander at what's in store.)

I can't say how much it means to me that these writers are writing the story-from-here in the Legacy series: because I've watched TPTB dismiss the characters who weren't white and weren't male, coding them as insignificant, stupid, and unimportant; I've watched the majority of fandom do exactly the same thing, in some cases worse than anything TPTB cooked up.

And all of a sudden there are writers who'll be writing not!John, not!Rodney, not!Jack, and not!Daniel as though they've got hopes and plans and places to go, things to be, actions to do, stories to influence?

Large portions of my f-list and dwircle from SGA are people who struggled with the fact that TPTB and fandom didn't really give anyone who wasn't John or Rodney a fair go.

In the Legacy series, they do. And it's an and, not an or. Neither John nor Rodney are ignored, dismissed, or left with one or two lines but nothing to do. It's not "reverse racism" at all: it's inclusion and acceptance. They're still valued, they're just alongside Teyla and Ronon, Sam and Radek, Woolsey, Lorne, Cadman, Carson and a slew of other characters.

So, really, if you struggled with the show's exclusion of anyone who wasn't John or Rodney, these stories are going to blow your mind. Of course, if you love John and Rodney, they're going to blow your mind as well.

TITLE: A Kingdom, Broken - Part Three
SUMMARY: Their goal was always to defeat the Wraith - or, at least, to find a way by which Pegasus could live without the shadow of the Wraith over them. But there could be no great success without an equally great price.
CATEGORY: action-adventure, drama, with a squidge of romance
RATING: PG-13
SPOILERS: Much of it occurs after Enemy At The Gates, and you will have to know what happened in Prodigal, but no major spoilers.

NOTES: Okay, so the writing has been a little slow lately. And long. And complicated, what with several ficathons due and massive epic plotbunnies trying to colonise my brain. Did I say the last section was part 2 of 3? AHAHAHAHA. Yeah, no. Um, sorry. Classic case of scope-creep in writing. This chapter I'm writing really is the last. Really. John is going to save the day, we'll finish the story, and everyone gets to go home with cookies. Yay, cookies!

First, the non-fandom question:

What kind of physical injury would take a cop out of the force entirely? Is there any such thing or would they just move them into bureaucracy or something non-physical?

--

And onto the fannishly-inclined question.

Would the scientists on Atlantis be under some kind of contractual obligation not to disobey or disregard the advice/goals of the military? ie. If, say, Rodney wanted to do something that would go very directly against the directives of the Earth military?

I don't think this ever came up in the show )

--

And finally and most crucially: What do you do with someone who contacts you on Facebook and seems to know all about you, but whom you don't ever remember meeting at all?

CATEGORY: action-adventure, drama
RATING: PG-13

NOTES: You know, once - just once - I would like to write a simple romance. Boy meets girl, boy and girl get it on like bunnies, happy ending. Obviously, this is not that story.

Still for the We'll Always Have Pegasus challenge at lostcityfound. And, um, yeah, the story is still going. I'm sorry about the month's delay between Part 1 and Part 2 - it's...well, it's been a rough time writing and I've let myself get distracted. I promise to provide a 'finish' at the end of Part 3, such that it isn't absolutely necessary for me to write the Bloody Epic that my muse thinks would be lots of fun to write.

It may be several weeks before I finish Part 3, I'm afraid, primarily due to my attempt to write something for Valentine's Day. (It's still an attempt right now, we'll see if it becomes an actuality before next Saturday, although I'm kinda doubting it.)

In the meantime...
