"Agent Stone."

"Thank God you're here, Maria. You need to blow this facility now."

"That's not in my standing orders, Jerry."

"Your standing orders just sat down."

"You don't have the authority to do that."

"The fuck I don't! I have three individuals shitting blood and guts, and two already decomposing. The rest of us are showing symptoms. Whatever it was on that meteor, it wasn't nice and it's not going to play ball with human physiology. Your Avengers might survive, the rest of us poor little humans on this godforsaken dustball of a planet won't."

Silence. A long silence. "You're asking for a burn notice."

"I'm asking you to save the fucking planet by being the stone cold bitch you made Lieutenant on before the Council realised you might be an individual and not a robot. Goddammit, Hill, this is not the time to go soft!"

"Why the hell didn't you use the self-destruct before this?"

"Because our first victim sabotaged it before we shot him down. The manual interface is shot to hell, but the remote codes should still work. We're locked down and Komaki and I have a headcount. We're all here." The dead man took a deep breath. "I need you to blow this taco stand,Hill. Do it now, while we can guarantee that nothing's going to get out."

Closing his eyes, Steve saw her face again, the mask that fell over her eyes as she spoke with her contact on the inside, like a bunker locked down. When she spoke, it was cold - the inner ice of someone who wasn't going to allow themselves to feel or they'd shatter from the pressure.

"Do you want me to notify Jenny?"

"I... Yes. Please. Tell her...the usual."

"It's been an honour, Agent Stone."

"Likewise, Lieutenant."

This was going to be in a scene of the fic, but I think I'll just leave Steve in the dark and have him deal with Maria and her actions without the justification.

Not a lot of time to spend online today, so I haven't checked the f-list. I see Yuletide sign-ups are a go, but will have to ponder them in the next day or two. Need to locate that tags list...
