Drop in and put your $0.05 in if you feel it's needful. (Or if you can bear the LJ commenting system - I know a lot of DWs don't.)
NPT is kicking my ass. A wild action scene has just ambled into the story and is consuming resources at an alarming rate. It's supposed to be a lighthearted fic!
Also, I'm not sure it's actually a story about a relationship anymore.
Remember how cross I was about the male quilter on the national TV show? Well, I made a comment on FB and it seems he found it. Defended himself with "well, maybe they were just looking for someone flamboyant and personality-high like my alterego". *sigh* I probably should have replied, but I didn't want to deal with him and his, well, harem of followers who were all "too right!"
The truth is that if they were looking for someone who didn't fit the bill of 'traditional quilter' there are a decent number of women - young and alternative - who can break the mould. But they picked a man to represent the majority of women in a women-oriented craft. It's not about him (or his alter ego). It's that true representation has been completely FUCKED OVER in the name of making the White Man king. Again.
And only a handful of us see this as a problem.
Granted quilting 'fandom' is full of middle-upperclass white women. Quilting is not a thrift activity anymore - it's a luxury one. And the younger quilters tend to be stay-at-home mothers and the older ones tend conservative. That, right there, tells you a shitload about these people and their prejudices.
Quilt show is next week. And he's front-and-centre in it. This will be, for want of a better word, "interesting".

Quilting is FULL of older white women who have money to burn. Around here, not many stay at home moms (in my neck of the woods, the women tend to go back to work as soon as kids are in full time school, if they didn't go before that).
I have so many thoughts about feminism and quilting and the intersection, but I'm seriously jet lagged and not sure you want me to spout off (I'm guessing you have many of the same thoughts anyway).
Just trying to say, I get it. 100%.

*sigh*
I'm struggling with my npt fic today, too. It simply won't behave!
Misery loves company, no?
