The things you learn while reading a share prospectus. An Australian private health insurer cannot, by law, be refused a policy, charged a higher premium, or denied particular product features.

A side-effect of this is that policyholders can switch between private health insurers without needing to re-serve waiting periods on a comparable cover.

And our politicians want us to go to the American system?

Mind you, the share prospectus I'm reading is for a government-owned private health insurer that is about to be sold off in a public listing...
