So, I do have answers for the days I've missed, but this one is easy and I have it written out and, oh look, it's today!

Comics: her mother died when she was a baby, her father was emotionally abusive to her. She came to S.H.I.E.L.D’s notice in Madripoor.
My headcanon for MCU Maria: her father remarried – a mouse of a woman – and had more children (six of them: Josh, Michaela, David, Jono, Esther, and Paul: I even know their ages). When Maria was 16, her father backhanded her in a temper over some insignificant matter. Maria walked out of that house and never went back again.
She joined the Marines straight out from school. Tried to get in to the Navy SEALS program and was knocked back because she didn't have a dick. Was on rotation in SE Asia when Madam Hydra tried to take over Madripoor, and bumped into Peggy Carter there which made her alert to the danger Madam Hydra presented and gave her some fledgling resources with which to work.
With the assistance of various parties – including Jessan Hoan, the assassin Yukio, and the legendary Black Widow – Maria takes Madripoor back. But she doesn't do it for S.H.I.E.L.D. Instead, she hands the city-state back over to the Hoan family to run, much to the annoyance of S.H.I.E.L.D command.
(Madripoor was supposed to become a major hub for HYDRA - whether Madam Hydra took it, or S.H.I.E.L.D took it, HYDRA would have had access to it. Instead, Maria handed it back to the Hoan family, basically shoving a spoke in HYDRA's wheel.)
However, her work in Madripoor still gets her a recommendation from Peggy that leads to her entry into S.H.I.E.L.D Operations Academy.
Coulson was assigned as her SO, and her work and loyalty was notable enough that various parties (Fury, among others) took an interest in her, with an eye to grooming her for command.
That's the basic history I work with for my fanfic about Maria. :)
