Once again, I didn't sign up for Remix. I did, however, pick up a pinch-hit at the end:
title: My God, It's Full Of Nerds (the It's Sci-Fi All The Way Down remix)
summary:Do not argue with nerds, for you are unschooled in knowledge and taste delicious with pedantry. (Or: "Steve Rogers and the Science-Fiction of the Twenty-First Century")
rating: G
characters/pairings: Steve Rogers, Maria Hill, (cameo Pepper and Tony)
tags: Humor, Geekery, Friendship, Fluff
notes: inspired by The Ultimate Question (a.k.a. Steve Really Needs New Friends) as a pinch-hit for [archiveofourown.org profile] LadyMerlin in the [community profile] remixrevival.
I'm pretty happy with this one.

A very small pool this year, but I still matched with at least one person who requested Maria & Pepper!

I admit, I would have liked to write a treat for [archiveofourown.org profile] CamrynBarnes as the only other person who asked for Maria/Steve, but simply didn't have the time. I did get a couple of hundred words into several different universes, the problem is reaching a satisfactory ending...

Anyway, my assignment for [archiveofourown.org profile] finnimbrand:

title: Travel By Bubble
pairings/characters: Maria Hill & Pepper Potts, Maria Hill, Pepper Potts, JARVIS.
tags: Alternate Universe - Fairy Tale
notes: I had such trouble with this, because neither Maria nor Pepper manage to fill the 'heroine' roles in femme-focused fairytales in any way, shape, or form - they're not the wanderers or explorers so much as the guardians and maintainers, and so trying to write them in as the heroines involved a lot of backstory and worldbuilding. In the end, I kind of said, "Ah, to heck with it," and just wrote them as the fairy godmothers, because they fit there!
summary:
“Why pink, anyway?” She wondered idly as she combed her fingers through the still-damp strands. “If we can magic the bubble into any color, why pink?”

“We tried making the bubble with all the other colours,” Maria reminded her from where she sat at the portable desk. “Pink’s the most efficient.”

And a treat I wrote for [archiveofourown.org profile] Rivulet027 because I had time and the idea took hold of me:

title: Break My Bones But You Won't See Me Fall
pairing/characters: Bucky/Sam, Bucky Barnes, Sam Wilson, original characters, (background Steve/Maria).
tags: First Meeting, Alternate Universe - Single Parents, Alternate Universe - Human
notes: So I like these two flirting. They seem the type, and they work for me. Plus, the idea of Sam as a single daddy is just too much cute, and I'm pretty sure that Bucky agrees. I kind of 'reused' the character of Pippa from 'And Baby Makes Eight', only Steve is her biodad as well as her father in this universe.
summary:
Sam doesn't hold hands on the first date. Luckily, they're about to have dinner together...

And the archive is open!

My assignment was for [archiveofourown.org profile] Persephones_Keeper | [profile] crossing_hades

title: Reasons Of Presence
summary: The traditions of Wakanda are heavy, and in these changing times, T’Challa is always and constantly aware that if the armour of the Black Panther weighs down upon his shoulders, it will be that much heavier with the weight of crown and kingdom added to it.
tags: T'Challa and Okoye, T'Challa & Maria Hill
rating: G
notes: This was not strictly the request, but I thought a little delving into T'Challa's history and how Wakanda decided to return to the world as more than merely a shadow power would be an interesting diversion. There was, initially, meant to be more.

--

My gift was by [archiveofourown.org profile] Dazzledfirestar:

title: Comfort
summary: The real fall out would come later. For now, Helen needs a friend and a good meal.
tags: Helen Cho, Maria Hill, friendship, food
rating: G

It's a wonderful little post-Age-of-Ultron glimpse into the professional relationship of the two women and how it verges on the personal.

--

My recommendations so far:

title: On Your Left
author: [archiveofourown.org profile] ladydeathfaerie
summary: Two tours of duty as a pararescue have left their scars on Sam Wilson. In order to live and function with his emotional wounds, Sam's developed a simple coping method. After a particularly bad night, Sam resorts to said method to clear his mind. Imagine his surprise when it results in new friends and, ultimately, a new purpose in life.
tags: Sam Wilson, Riley, Nightmares PTSD
rating: PG-13
why: A little pre-Winter Soldier look into Sam and his coping mechanisms, what happened with Riley, and Sam's internal monologues.

title: A Waltz In The Woods With My Brother
author: [archiveofourown.org profile] kyburg
summary: When you have no loyalty shown you, what makes you wager everything on gaining it from those who would imprison you?
tags: Hogun, Jim Morita, World War II, Taking Liberties With History And Canon
rating: PG-13
why: This is a very unusual story, not two characters that you'd think to put together at all, and I'm not sure if the backstory they've used for Hogun came from the comics, or if they made it up. But I liked the look into Jim's mindset (although, I believe he said he was from California?) as well as Odin's evident trust in Hogun.

title: Play On
author: [archiveofourown.org profile] Dazzledfirestar
summary: Sam has a rough night, but he's got some help on hand.
tags: Sam Wilson, PTSD, Bucky Barnes, Bucky Barnes/Sam Wilon
rating: G
why: Because I like the idea of Bucky making Sam a cup of tea at oh-whatever-hours to settle not only Sam's memories but his own...

There are others I like the look of, but these are the underappreicated ones - more gen than slash/ship and about characters who don't get a lot of love. There's at least one story with Raina, several with T'Challa, quite a few with Sam, and one Sam/Rhodey that I think I do gotta take a closer look at.

Go forth and read!

Written as a pinch-hit for Avengersfest 2016:

Carter's Eleven
“Have no fear, Director,” Zola said in primly satisfied accents. “I assure you that there is no one person who can make a difference to Thursday’s events.”

I angsted a lot about this story - what to change, what to keep, how to rewrite the timeline and the scenes reasonably to give the women the opportunity to shine as they are, not just slotted into the appropriate character positions. This may not be the Carter's Eleven I originally envisioned, but it one works better in-canon, I think.

ACCURATE CAPSLOCK REVIEW IS ACCURATE - linked to by [personal profile] kore, whose rage at the movie is a wonderful and sanitizing thing for me.

My thoughts on what I was hoping for out of an MCU Civil War, and which Captain America: Civil War failed to provide. It was also in refutation of a Captain Hill shipper who thought Sharon was replaceable in the movie. (She wasn't, but the romance was handled with unspeakable awkwardness.)

At some point, I will write the letter to Marvel Movies in which I indicate why a Black Widow movie will make things worse for female characters in the MCU, and you will all bitch me out, then unfriend me, and then blacken my name throughout the fandom.

But today is not that day.

Today I'm going to finish this ridiculous fic, and make more Maria Hill icons, because for reasons inexplicable to a fan such as myself, there are simply not enough of them around.

And then I'm going to see the chiropractor in the afternoon and get a quote for the fence, because in the midst of fannish frivolity, there must also be management of the mundane.

The oxycodene (percocet?) is GOOOD STUFFFF. Unfortunately, it's also salicylates based, which means my intolerances flared.

So we're back to Panadeine Forte (panadeine/codeine).

I got, oh, about 4 hours sleep last night before I woke up. Got up, did some writing and thinking and more writing, and then didn't really get back to bed and sleep until, oh, a bit past midday.

Drowsed all afternoon, cleaned up the garden and felt pretty good, had dinner. (Roast pumpkin soup, from a chicken bone broth base. A big spoon of sour cream and two slices of bread.)

Right now, I think the oxycodene has worn off, and it's feeling throbby and annoying, which combined with the feeling of sandblasted eyeballs and general exhaustion, is not a good feeling.

However, in productivity news, I did write a fic for the Maria Hill Comment Fic fest. (It's not a very nice fic, but it's what my brain came up with for the prompt.)

I wrote two fics for [community profile] smutswap:

My assignment was for [personal profile] geckoholic. It was going to be a series of smutlets, except the first one kind of blew out (hur-hur) and then I ran out of time, as per usual. So instead of starting at vanilla and moving on to further kink, it kind of ended up staying at vanilla.

Presumptuous - MCU: Maria/Steve - First Time, Woman On Top
Maria Hill's opinion of Steve Rogers in bed: "A+ partner, would fuck again."

After I finished my assignment, I went looking for more Maria/Steve prompts, and found a couple of others. This one ended up being for both [personal profile] geckoholic and [archiveofourown.org profile] catandmouse10 because they asked for different prompts but it kind of all ended up in the same fic.

What Happens In Asgard - MCU: Maria/Steve - Established Relationship, Secret Relationship, Wall Sex, Sharing A Bed, Drunk Confessions, Fucked Against A Window, Clothed/Naked.
Asgard isn’t interested in the sex lives of its royalty, and even less in the sex lives of its royalty's visitors...

The second one is technically set after CA:CW but it's a very technical consideration.

My [livejournal.com profile] shipswap assignment was, again, MCU: Steve/Maria. (Hey, I'm not complaining. I just wish other people would write them, too.)

Recipient was [archiveofourown.org profile] sbarmarj and I admit, I used something I already had since she hadn't given me any prompts!

Building Blocks - MCU: Steve/Maria
Building a relationship, note by note.

This is also the next installation of Steve/Maria fic-tag that I've been playing with [livejournal.com profile] geckoholic (man, you got a lot of Steve/Maria fic out of me this round) whose prompt was Post-It / Sticky Notes from my [community profile] cottoncandy_bingo 2014 card.

And I picked up a pinch-hit in the first round of defaults for [archiveofourown.org profile] lynndyre:

any port in a storm but only one place to call home - Persuasion: Anne Elliot/Frederick Wentworth
Something in her holds him fast, like the last line connecting a ship to shore.

...and then I saw a prompt by [archiveofourown.org profile] Rina which I ended up gifting ahead of the story reveals because the only fics being posted on the Maria/Steve AO3 feed were those not-fics by the person who's basically tag-trolling for hits and I wanted something decent on there.

Snow Falling On City Blocks - MCU: Steve/Maria
He glances at the woman beside him and wonders. “What do you see?"

Hill glances at him, a startled blink of blue eyes beneath ridiculously long, curling dark lashes. “Cover. Concealment. Cold.” The smile flickers sideways. “And, apparently, alliterative tendencies.”

Finally, about two hours before I went off to see CA:CW, I wrote metafic:

Pinky And The Brain - MCU: Maria & Pepper
"You know, if we’d been in the movie, and the script had been written by a woman who actually likes women, it would have been very different."

Yeah, it's been a busy couple of weeks.

...and with that, I am at 699 works on AO3!

Um. Wow. I was only at 600 in February last year, with No Fate. Where has the time gone? (How the hell did I manage to write 100 fics in a year - some of them rather long!)

Thankfully May is a quiet month (for a given value of 'quiet').

I have To The End Of Love (post-CA:CW fic) on the brain, which I just need to shut up the inner editors and write. It won't be very good, I think, and there'll be holes that I could drive a helicarrier through, but I want it out of my head. OUT OUT DAMNED PLOTBUNNY!

And I have a feeling I'm not going to make the [livejournal.com profile] wipbigbang. That's supposed to be finishing a practical acquaintance with bees and unless I'm really crazily inspired in the next couple of weeks (well, the next week) I don't think I'm going to make the snippet deadline...

So for those of you who don't like Negative Nellies (as a former LJ friend once said: "Just because I will defend to the death your right to say this doesn't mean I want to listen to it" - and yes, it was in reference to personal problems, not something like, say, politics), this is the upbeat post.

Due to not having to go in to work this week, I am spending at least 2 hours at the local library writing every day. It means I'm getting actual writing done. Not as much as I hoped, and not on the stories I wish I was writing, but...WRITING.

Which I'm going to need. Argh Smut Swap! (Don't even talk to me about Ship Swap. Don't. Even.)

That Maria is actually in Cap 3: Civil War after all.

Which is at once exciting and terrifying. Because the good guys will always come up smelling of roses - even Tony's partisans. But a woman who's previously demonstrated ambivalence is, as always, dispensable in the eyes of canon and fanon creators.

If you're not faithful as a woman, you're a whore, and anyone has the right to trash you over.

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

I'm going to talk about a scene that most people wouldn't think is one of my favourites, but it was pretty much the moment I knew I was going to be a little longer in MCU fandom than just that first year.

In the first episode of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, Maria Hill is interviewing Grant Ward to be a part of Coulson's team.

Maria Hill: Everything's changing. A little while ago, most people went to bed thinking that the craziest thing in the world was a billionaire in a flying metal suit. Then aliens invade New York then were beaten back by among others, a giant green monster, a costumed hero from the 40's, and a God.
Grant Ward: I don't think Thor's technically a God.
Maria Hill: Well, you haven't been near his arms.

Frankly, before that point, most of fandom behaved as though Maria was basically scenery; as Ward mocks her later that season: she was eye candy, and barely even that when compared the Black Widow. She wasn't a proponent of the Avengers Initiative, which meant she wasn't one of the Good Guys (like Coulson or Fury), and her most redeeming feature seemed to be that she was one more woman in the movie canon.

I saw more in the character from my second viewing of the Avengers movie.

I saw a very droll, very dry sense of humour displayed in the exchanges with Stark: "When did you become an expert in thermonuclear astrophysics?" and "He turns." I saw a deep sense of duty and responsibility to chase down an enemy who's already turned two of their people. And a deep and serious affection for Phil Coulson in her reaction to the news of his death, and in the deadly glare she levels at Tony and Steve from the bridge.

But that scene of Maria interviewing Grant Ward? That was something that other people in fandom could grasp - that Maria Hill had a sense of humour which she could let out to play when the world wasn't at stake, that her connections with Fury and Coulson were deeper than their disagreements over the Avengers Initiative, and that she could put up with shit in the name of getting the job done.

And it brought me great joy to see my view of the character confirmed - and to have the character brought back into the universe.

(I'm debating whether I want to do Challenge 6 right now. Challenge 5 was to make a fanwork, which i have no trouble doing, only all mine went to [community profile] fandom_stocking.)

Create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

Well, I've never been afraid to ask for more of what I want. I just don't ever get it!

1. An epic action-adventure packed Steve/Maria story, where they come together, fall in love, have to defeat an enemy, and get out of it all. Civil War optional, or maybe just the process of Steve realising that while he doesn't want a home-and-family white picket fence kind of life, he does want this one woman, and then having to overcome his expectations of what she might want from him that he's not able to give (the white picket fence).

2. The Star Wars Original Trilogy story (again, epic) where Luke turns to the Dark Side in the Emperor's Throne Room and Leia has to escape Endor, learn to be a Jedi and turn her brother back from the Dark Side.

spoilers for SW:TFA )

3. I would love a Mucha-style drawing of Maria Hill. Something like the graphic here, only with her standing in uniform, guns in hand, ready to fire. (Alternatively, in the red dress from AoU, Steve's jacket on her shoulders, gun in her hand, looking out of the picture.) The problem is mostly that I don't want one of the promo or movie stills of her superimposed on a Mucha-style background - I want actual hand-drawn art by an artist - original pose, original design, and a reasonable (or, at least, recognisable) resemblance. This is not easy to find.

(Incidentally, I made the graphic in the link; I used Cobie's face, hodgepodged a whole bunch of other elements together (the dress, the arms, the jewel) and then added the hair, the background, and the arch. It took a long time. If someone was willing to take the time to do something like this in graphic art, that would also be amazing, but it takes a willingness to spend a lot of time, and a certain amount of determination to do it right.)
