Challenge #6: Share your favourite piece of original canon.

Look, it's never not going to be this scene from The Winter Soldier.

Anyone who knows me knows what's coming:

Maria Hill, saving Cap, the Widow, and the Falcon on a day when they're one television crew away from public execution with nothing more than a stun wand, a laser cutter, and a badly-fitting helmet.

Every time.

Maria Hill was integral to the connection of the Avengers to broader world security. When she left, in the time between Age of Ultron and Civil War, her absence and the loss of her pragmatism resulted in World Security continuing to run on automatic for a bit but the wheels eventually falling off.

(I waver between her absence being due to personal illness, Fury made demands of her time, or the Avengers simply didn't bother to keep the relationship going, thinking they could do it themselves. Or possibly a combination of all three factors.)

Challenge #10

In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, creator, episode, or it could be your fandom friends. Share your love and squee as loud as you want to. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Dear Maria,

You appeared in the opening scene of a movie whose precedents I hadn’t paid much attention to. Oh, I’d watched them, enjoyed them, but they were popcorn films, full of action and heroics of characters I liked watching but didn’t really hit it off with.

For [community profile] intoabar 2018 - they're presently taking sign-ups for the 2019 round.

I got "Maria Hill meets Ares (Wonder Woman)":

The Check And The Balance Unpaid (2108 words) by tielan
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe, Wonder Woman (2017)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Maria Hill, Patrick Morgan | Ares
Additional Tags: Community: intoabar, Power Dynamics (non-sexual)
Summary:

There was something avid about the earnestly pleasant expression on his face that was...repulsive. Some gleam in his eye, some smugness about the set of his mouth. It reminded her of Loki, back when he’d been imprisoned on the helicarrier – the sense that there was something more winding around and about and through all this. One move on a chessboard and the goal was checkmate.

And in my Fire And Ice MCU Jaeger AU series, there's another chapter of the friendship between Maria and Pepper:

It's actually #6 in the series, but there are 8 stories, so far. Eventually (very eventually) I'll finish the series (at least two more to go, maybe three).

My [community profile] mcu_exchange assignment will be live this weekend, I don't know if it will be identifiable (probably) but it should be fun.

And the [community profile] auexchange is coming to town again!

I am debating signing up, but...I do love AUs. Yes, I know, I need more exchange assignments like I need a hole in the head. *sigh*

And this job is going to leave me with no time to write the novel I hoped to have done by the end of August.

This is the story of how they saved themselves.

And I feel like right now I need a bit of 'flop' space for my brain to recover from writing and rewriting and stressing and ARGH. It won't get much time, for that, though. I bought my ticket for Endgame, next Wednesday 5:20pm. Expect copious ranting around 9pm AEST.

Not going to look at the release. Not going to check out spoilers. On the other hand if the movie is actually about how Maria gets to save the world with all the other Snaptured people...

*crickets chirp*

Yeah, I didn't think so.

Frankly, I just want to make it out of this fandom alive.

Well, I liked his theory anyway.

But it looks like Maria's not in A4 as an actual character; once again, she's not listed in the credits.

This is what happens when your big fics require smaller fics that detail little events that happened earlier in the timeline in order to keep them straight in your own head. If I'd thought about it properly, then I'd have also included discussions that I used for flashbacks in 'Atlas Stumbles' - the post-IW fic with Steve and Okoye. Ah well.

For [community profile] trickortreatex, one assignment, one treat, and I wish I'd managed more, but my brain was not co-operating in spite of having all of October off.

The request for this was Orsino/Viola or Antonio with a happy ending, and specified Viola being non-cisgender, or Antonio being non-heterosexual. I do like Orsino/Viola, and wanted to play around a bit more with what Viola might be missing after the end of the play when she's given up being Cesario.

A Desperate State Of Being (2066 words) by tielan

Fandom: Twelfth Night - Shakespeare
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Orsino/Viola | Cesario (Twelfth Night)
Characters: Viola | Cesario (Twelfth Night), Orsino (Twelfth Night)
Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Married Life, Gender Roles
Summary:
A marriage is a private thing. It has its own wild laws, and secret histories, and savage acts, and what passes between married people is incomprehensible to outsiders. We look terrible to you, and severe, and you see our blood flying, but what we carry between us is hard-won, and we made it just as we wished it to be, just the color, just the shape.

Another one for [community profile] trickortreatex - this one is the treat, and pretty much spoke to me right from the prompt.

I participated in the MCU Rolling Remix again.

TITLE: Find Yourself In The Moment And Know That It Won’t Last (the Second String remix)
SUMMARY: Tony isn't the only one making a family out of a rag-tag bunch of heroes.
RELATIONSHIPS: Pepper Potts & James "Rhodey" Rhodes, Maria Hill & Pepper Potts, Pepper Potts/Tony Stark (background)
CHARACTERS: Pepper Potts, Maria Hill, James "Rhodey" Rhodes, Sam Wilson (Marvel, )Jane Foster (Marvel), Helen Cho, Steve Rogers (cameo)
TAGS: Friendship, Avengers Tower, Post-Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers Family
RATING: G
WARNINGS: None
NOTES: As is usual with remixes, I managed to take a story that had almost nothing about the characters I like and turn it into a story about the characters I do like. The story this was remixed from was If You Hold Me (I'll Never Be Lonely) and was your typical found family Avengers fic. And the fic remixed from mine - A Boulder In The River (we keep moving forward) by [archiveofourown.org profile] dapperanachronism - is excellent, because I was trying to find a way to include JARVIS in my story and couldn't quite make it work.

Starting to dump my old MCU/Avengers fics. A handful of people are still reading.

title: Still Terrifying
summary: They agreed to terrify each other. Maybe just not quite this way.
rating: PG13

notes: Was a snippet from a sequel to A Woman Of Edges; never got finished.

summary: Orcs might be preferable. But one does not question Natasha Romanoff when she has taken it into her head to go on a road trip.
rating: PG13
tags: Maria Hill & Pepper Potts & Natasha Romanoff
notes: Was going to be a girls' road trip through the midwest, post-Avengers movie. Never got beyond this first snippet.

A very small pool this year, but I still matched with at least one person who requested Maria & Pepper!

I admit, I would have liked to write a treat for [archiveofourown.org profile] CamrynBarnes as the only other person who asked for Maria/Steve, but simply didn't have the time. I did get a couple of hundred words into several different universes, the problem is reaching a satisfactory ending...

Anyway, my assignment for [archiveofourown.org profile] finnimbrand:

title: Travel By Bubble
pairings/characters: Maria Hill & Pepper Potts, Maria Hill, Pepper Potts, JARVIS.
tags: Alternate Universe - Fairy Tale
notes: I had such trouble with this, because neither Maria nor Pepper manage to fill the 'heroine' roles in femme-focused fairytales in any way, shape, or form - they're not the wanderers or explorers so much as the guardians and maintainers, and so trying to write them in as the heroines involved a lot of backstory and worldbuilding. In the end, I kind of said, "Ah, to heck with it," and just wrote them as the fairy godmothers, because they fit there!
summary:
“Why pink, anyway?” She wondered idly as she combed her fingers through the still-damp strands. “If we can magic the bubble into any color, why pink?”

“We tried making the bubble with all the other colours,” Maria reminded her from where she sat at the portable desk. “Pink’s the most efficient.”

And a treat I wrote for [archiveofourown.org profile] Rivulet027 because I had time and the idea took hold of me:

title: Break My Bones But You Won't See Me Fall
pairing/characters: Bucky/Sam, Bucky Barnes, Sam Wilson, original characters, (background Steve/Maria).
tags: First Meeting, Alternate Universe - Single Parents, Alternate Universe - Human
notes: So I like these two flirting. They seem the type, and they work for me. Plus, the idea of Sam as a single daddy is just too much cute, and I'm pretty sure that Bucky agrees. I kind of 'reused' the character of Pippa from 'And Baby Makes Eight', only Steve is her biodad as well as her father in this universe.
summary:
Sam doesn't hold hands on the first date. Luckily, they're about to have dinner together...

And the archive is open!

My assignment was for [archiveofourown.org profile] Persephones_Keeper | [profile] crossing_hades

title: Reasons Of Presence
summary: The traditions of Wakanda are heavy, and in these changing times, T’Challa is always and constantly aware that if the armour of the Black Panther weighs down upon his shoulders, it will be that much heavier with the weight of crown and kingdom added to it.
tags: T'Challa and Okoye, T'Challa & Maria Hill
rating: G
notes: This was not strictly the request, but I thought a little delving into T'Challa's history and how Wakanda decided to return to the world as more than merely a shadow power would be an interesting diversion. There was, initially, meant to be more.

--

My gift was by [archiveofourown.org profile] Dazzledfirestar:

title: Comfort
summary: The real fall out would come later. For now, Helen needs a friend and a good meal.
tags: Helen Cho, Maria Hill, friendship, food
rating: G

It's a wonderful little post-Age-of-Ultron glimpse into the professional relationship of the two women and how it verges on the personal.

--

My recommendations so far:

title: On Your Left
author: [archiveofourown.org profile] ladydeathfaerie
summary: Two tours of duty as a pararescue have left their scars on Sam Wilson. In order to live and function with his emotional wounds, Sam's developed a simple coping method. After a particularly bad night, Sam resorts to said method to clear his mind. Imagine his surprise when it results in new friends and, ultimately, a new purpose in life.
tags: Sam Wilson, Riley, Nightmares PTSD
rating: PG-13
why: A little pre-Winter Soldier look into Sam and his coping mechanisms, what happened with Riley, and Sam's internal monologues.

title: A Waltz In The Woods With My Brother
author: [archiveofourown.org profile] kyburg
summary: When you have no loyalty shown you, what makes you wager everything on gaining it from those who would imprison you?
tags: Hogun, Jim Morita, World War II, Taking Liberties With History And Canon
rating: PG-13
why: This is a very unusual story, not two characters that you'd think to put together at all, and I'm not sure if the backstory they've used for Hogun came from the comics, or if they made it up. But I liked the look into Jim's mindset (although, I believe he said he was from California?) as well as Odin's evident trust in Hogun.

title: Play On
author: [archiveofourown.org profile] Dazzledfirestar
summary: Sam has a rough night, but he's got some help on hand.
tags: Sam Wilson, PTSD, Bucky Barnes, Bucky Barnes/Sam Wilon
rating: G
why: Because I like the idea of Bucky making Sam a cup of tea at oh-whatever-hours to settle not only Sam's memories but his own...

There are others I like the look of, but these are the underappreicated ones - more gen than slash/ship and about characters who don't get a lot of love. There's at least one story with Raina, several with T'Challa, quite a few with Sam, and one Sam/Rhodey that I think I do gotta take a closer look at.

Go forth and read!

Written as a pinch-hit for Avengersfest 2016:

Carter's Eleven
“Have no fear, Director,” Zola said in primly satisfied accents. “I assure you that there is no one person who can make a difference to Thursday’s events.”

I angsted a lot about this story - what to change, what to keep, how to rewrite the timeline and the scenes reasonably to give the women the opportunity to shine as they are, not just slotted into the appropriate character positions. This may not be the Carter's Eleven I originally envisioned, but it one works better in-canon, I think.

ACCURATE CAPSLOCK REVIEW IS ACCURATE - linked to by [personal profile] kore, whose rage at the movie is a wonderful and sanitizing thing for me.

My thoughts on what I was hoping for out of an MCU Civil War, and which Captain America: Civil War failed to provide. It was also in refutation of a Captain Hill shipper who thought Sharon was replaceable in the movie. (She wasn't, but the romance was handled with unspeakable awkwardness.)

At some point, I will write the letter to Marvel Movies in which I indicate why a Black Widow movie will make things worse for female characters in the MCU, and you will all bitch me out, then unfriend me, and then blacken my name throughout the fandom.

But today is not that day.

Today I'm going to finish this ridiculous fic, and make more Maria Hill icons, because for reasons inexplicable to a fan such as myself, there are simply not enough of them around.

And then I'm going to see the chiropractor in the afternoon and get a quote for the fence, because in the midst of fannish frivolity, there must also be management of the mundane.
