Because I needed a bit more on the origins of Extremis.

Extremis makes the soldiers/bombs in IM3 out of what they already have - physical recovery is guaranteed, and physical strength is increased, although the question arises about Pepper's "threat assessment and neutralisation" abilities in the last sequence. That type of ability isn't just physical strength, but tactical and execution capabilities which Pepper doesn't have sans Extremis - certainly not to the level of muscle memory that she'd need to do it so fluidly.

Ellen Brandt was one of the Extremis soldiers. One wonders: any relation to William?

"Pure science - and then the ego steps in and it all goes haywire. You look up and you're a long way from shore."

Extremis is the basis of the Centipede super-soldier program, right?

Thought: it's one thing to create soldiers - but just super-soldiers aren't enough. You want super-soldiers who are loyal to the cause. (X-Wings: Lara Notsil, anyone?) Which is why the brainwashing of Bucky, and holding Mike Peterson's son hostage to his good behaviour.

Thought: To Abraham Erskine, Steve's suitability with the serum was entirely based on Steve's heart. Courage and a moral compass was more important than Steve's strength before the serum, because the serum would give him the strength - would, in fact, make him more.

Thought: The MCU has taken the "spiritual more" factor out of the Extremis and Centipede serums, which may very well reflect the post-modern spiritual view of the world in which those formulas were developed - that the spiritual and moral worldview is private and separate from the physical and social. Erskine came from a time and a place and a people where one's spiritual view of the world was not just a part of him that gets slotted away, but which forms the entirety of his being and his interaction with the world.

In that sense, Colonel Phillips had very much the 'post-modern' worldview: he wanted a super-soldier, period. Moral compass irrelevant, so long as he charged when pointed in the 'right' direction (where 'right' was defined by his commanders).

Thought I found in an email draft (yes, I store things in email drafts when I'm at work):
I think it would be pretty hard on Bucky to be around Steve post-brainwashing, especially once he realised how much he'd done as the Winter Soldier. The need for that connection between them is strong on Steve's side, but I think it would be more difficult on Bucky's side: his best buddy, sure, but the light side to all the dark he's done.

If Bucky's a good man (and I believe he is) then even when recovered being around Steve would hurt, especially in the knowledge of what Bucky has on his hands - brainwashed or not, his hands did the killing. And Steve can make light of it, but he doesn't have Bucky's fragmented memories as TWS staining everything he is. He can go forward, but he can't change the past. And his past (his memories would say it's his past, no matter what others told him, or what he tried to tell himself) is that of a monster.

My morning (quilting and gardening) blogposts are done, there was a little work but nothing to signify. It may be time to listen to more AoS. Although that may be counterproductive to writing.

We don't actually know what kind of moral or mental effects Centipede and/or Extremis might have. On the other hand, [personal profile] melannen has a fic that touches on some of these ideas in re: Bruce Banner. If They Ever Put A Bullet Through Your Brain (I'll Complain)
