So, all the writing that was going to happen on the weekend didn't.
Mostly because I woke up tired after sleeping in (until 7:30am - that's sleeping in for me) and then found my hands shaking while I was out gardening. I took that as a sign of extreme fatigue and pretty much spent the rest of the weekend doing nothing but re-reading pretty much the entire SGA Legacy series. (Still so good.)
No writing. Maybe a few words, but otherwise... Nope.
I didn't even watch Agents of SHIELD. :(
But there's a lot of backlog in my head. Some MCU, some Jupiter Ascending.
The problem with MCU is that (I'm reaching the "I know I'm about to get jossed and I suspect they're going to kill Maria off permanently because they haven't killed off either Fury or Coulson and a 'regular' needs to die and Maria's expendable from the POV of story, movie/show contracts, producer/writer/hollywood moghul, and the general fandom and I am exceedingly cross about this" point where I don't want to invest because I'm only going to get my heart broken.
The problem with Jupiter Ascending is that it's either mostly kink, which is all very well, but hard for me to do without addressing the broader universe - you know me and PWP: it turns into character stuff. Which, yes, I'm sure people want, but it means a lot of building up ideas and concepts and thought.
Or else it's the massive epic sequel that kind of starts with this Pacific Rim crossover fic.
Basically, Jupiter isn't mentally equipped to Stop Space Capitalism. She's a dispossessed American 20-something who has little idea of how the world works. What she needs is a political mentor to take her through the whole process - and someone who will understand her revulsion towards Regenex.
Enter another Recurrence from Earth - some twenty years earlier, perhaps, who was smuggled from Earth when her geneprint registered (because Earth at that point still belonged to Balem so his goons/keepers were going to punish the trespass, even if they weren't going to hunt the Recurrence down if it's not important) and taught a lot about Entitled politics and plays, and how to survive in them.
(See why Mako fits so nicely into this? Plus Channing Tatum with the chinscruff looks awfully like Charlie Hunnam as Jax Teller and, you know, I couldn't pass up the connection.)
The thing is that, narratively, in my brain, the new Recurrence either needs to be a betrayer, or be sheltering a betrayer. It adds character conflict, complexity, and a twist to the tale.
Which is where the JA/PR fusion breaks down somewhat. My best shot is that Raleigh-in-JA-verse was Entitled himself before someone in the family got caught splicing their genes into the lycantant strain - and given how gene-worship is totally a thing in JA-verse, they got dis-Entitled. It's not until Stacker drags him out of wherever he's been that JA-verse Raleigh gets back into the game, falls in love with Mako, and wants to spend forever with her. Only she doesn't want forever: she wants to do the right thing.
And yes, he gets a redemption arc, but it ends in death.
So. It starts off looking reasonable, but given the angles I'm taking, it can only end in betrayal or death. And I'm really fond of Mako and Raleigh and don't really want them to end up as the bad guys.
I could maybe write Raleigh as being yet another Entitled Recurrent, but that makes three of them on Earth.
Which, admittedly, is my headcanon for another reason why Earth is so valuable. With thousands of babies born every day, and the human geneprints having 'purified' to the point where a Recurrence of Seraphi Abrasax can occur (presumably considered one of the more 'pure' human genestrains), the chances of a Recurrence are probably higher on Earth than on plenty of other planets with smaller populations and not so 'robust' a genestrain.
Now imagine that you own a planet which has a high possibility of Recurrences, and which is slated for Harvest. Imagine that you track all the children born there, and can instantly find any Recurrences as they happen - and depending on whether it's an ally or an enemy - can eliminate the individual or offer it up to the family and thereby have them in debt to you.
So yes, Earth is valuable, not only as a resource for Harvest, but in a potential 'breeding ground' for Recurrence.
(And the reason Jupiter falls through the cracks is because she was born on the ship from Russia to America, and was never registered anywhere. In the bureacracy, some people always fall through. Why should a technologically advanced universe's administration procedure be any different?)
Anyway, that's the writing and where it's at.
I need to set an early morning alarm, before the 'get ready for work' alarm, to get myself up and writing in the dark of the winter...
