Still going, albeit slowly.

One of the advantages of breaking up FitzSimmons is that we get to see who they are without each other.

And it's...not as good as they are together, in partnership.

I mean, Jemma is bright and chirpy as per usual, but her interactions have the false brightness of someone who's in a place where she can't trust anyone. If you hadn't seen her with the team, you'd probably think this was just the way she is, but, I don't know. There was a stillness in Jemma in S1 - a serenity - that's missing now. It's very subtle, but it's definitely there.

And Fitz. Oh, Fitz. Knowing how far he's fallen, and struggling against the knowledge. (Someone must have written the fic "Flowers For Leopold" in which Fitz confronts his descent full-on. Surely.)

That confrontation with Ward? Ouch. The shock and regret on Ward's face vs. the horror on Fitz's face: so powerful. And, unlike Skye, Fitz hasn't yet learned to hide his emotions, so it's all there, laid out for viewing.

Speaking of Skye: I imagine the thing with the heart-rate monitor will be A Thing later on in the series re: her abilities? Plus, training with May! And it's nice to see that Skye still has a good sense of the mischievous - quoting May right back at her.

One of the fics in the MCU Ladies exchange had Melinda talking to Natasha after this episode - about the first kill, and how to help Skye through it. I read the fic before I saw the episode, but it's nice to see things come to light.

And Agent 33 - is that Bobbi? Or someone else?

Dark-haired HYDRA guy reminds me of someone. Darned if I know who.

And Ward, Skye, and her father. Interesting to reflect that Ward didn't know about Skye until after he was revealed as HYDRA, and only then realising he knows her father. Although, interestingly, he's spent some three months as a prisoner and has only just pulled this rabbit out of the hat. Which, sure, maybe Skye hasn't given him a chance to, but there's no reason he couldn't lead with "I know who your father is".

Iiiinteresting.

Whoever plots this series should win an award. Because the amount of brain power it takes to keep all this straight and tracking? Bloody impressive.

I was going to watch another episode this morning, but sewing and trimming and fussing and discussion of the local state election took over, and now I have to do some gardening before it gets too late.
