The premise in The 100 is that the bombs went off. We have 3 major groups 1) the ones that escaped to an orbiting space platform and eventually had to come back when the place was falling apart (space station living acclimatized them to the higher radiation on the planet 2) the group that road out the radiation. A hard century reorganizing into tribes, making the hard choices when a baby was born with deformities, etc... 3)The group that holed up in the fallout shelter with hydroponic gardens, electricity and books -- this group has the major disadvantage that they didn't acclimatize to the ambient radiation and are basically trapped in the shelter.
