Day 11: In your own space, talk about a creator. Show us why you think they are amazing. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
So, I met
shorti less than a year ago. I don't even remember how anymore - I think she posted some fic, and I read it and gushed. Or possibly she read one of my fics and gushed. It was definitely over the fic, though - both of us being fans of Steve/Maria as pairing in the MCU.
In any fandom, I like complex works that treat the characters like adults, and which focus on my favourite characters and pairings. Since my favourite characters are female and my favourite pairings are het - usually with the male 'bicycle' of the fandom (the one that everyone writes fucking everyone), I'm almost always going to be disappointed. There's generally lots of fluff and sweetness, but not a lot of complex issues or well-written character development.
For a character as underestimated and unappreciated as Maria Hill, that goes doubly so, since the only way most people know to write her is as a raging bitch or a coldly emotionless robot.
Finding another writer who was as into Steve/Maria as me and who could write the characters as I see them and complicated and well-written, with a focus on Maria, and everything was simply the most stupendous feeling. I haven't had that kind of commonality since my earliest days of Stargate SG1, back in the early 00s, when LiveJournal was a crazy busy place and everything was happening.
I have met and made lovely friends while writing MCU fic, and quite a few of them share my pairing(s) or are willing to read and enthuse about my stories, but finding someone who got as monofocused as I did about Maria/Steve and who I could bounce off when it comes to fic and fic ideas? Priceless. I have been so glad to meet
shorti in the last year and get chatting with her on all our various social media sites.
Extra bonus? She's also Australian! And of similar background! And has common interests! (Okay, now I sound kind of stalkery, but I swear I'm not.) In fact, the worst thing about knowing Shorti is that we only met in the last year, and she only started writing Maria/Steve this last year. When I think of what we could have achieved as partners-in-crime for the last four and a half years... ;)
Shorti's fics are available at AO3. She writes complications, angst, adults having to do what's right, and does it with a lovely flair.
If you like Maria/Steve, go read them. :)

Sheer pigheadedness, I suspect! :)

I've really missed that 'click' in MCU; while it certainly made my name as a fannish writer and gained me a whole range of new friends, what I've really longed for was someone to just gush with.
