Being an ABC: an Australian-born Chinese

Disclaimer: I was born in Australia to parents of Chinese ancestry, and brought up in this country; as such, my perspective is that of an Australian and the phrases and terminology I use may not carry the loading that they do in other countries. If I cause offence with something I say, I sincerely apologise (it was certainly not meant) and will attempt to rectify the offence once informed.

Terminology: In Australia, the term 'Asian' refers to persons of Chinese, Japanese, and the South East Asian descent. Just so the Brits don't get confused.

At least once, during a discussion of race, someone from my country came up with the little gem that "Australia doesn't have racism."

If they meant 'doesn't have racism' in the sense that non-whites aren't immediately lynched the moment they set foot on Australian soil, then, no, Australia doesn't have racism.

If they meant 'doesn't have racism' in the sense that racism doesn't exist in Australia...uh... Yes. Yes, it does.

Sunburned, maybe; but white beneath the tan, certainly. )

I guess this counts as blogging for International Blog Against Racism Week, although I intended for my contribution to be a post about being an Australian of Chinese descent and it's hardly an uplifting story.

this happened today, less than an hour ago: do not tell me that racism or sexism is dead )

This isn't BackwaterTown, BigotState; this is Sydney, Australia - a modern, global city in a CBD workplace of educated people.

Please don't tell me that feminism isn't needed anymore because we've corrected ourselves, or that racism doesn't exist or that it's not your problem as a white person. It's not that easy. This man didn't even think about what he was saying or implying; he just tossed it off, and added to the growing pile of FAIL that this day is turning out to be.

Edited to provide some clarification, add tags, and rejig the title for [livejournal.com profile] ibarw inclusion.

For those who would like to support [livejournal.com profile] ibarw, or think further on race relations in fandom and in RL:

1. Some suggestions for things you can do to support IBARW,

2. a list of links to icons and icon-makers for IBARW,

3. a list of links to race-related resources to read and think over.
