So, gardening. Mum called this morning at 8:30am to say she'd be coming around with her garden helper to help put in some fruit trees.

We got the avocado (grown from seed) and the two apples (my birthday present this year) in the ground, and moved the apricot over. We also discovered a large chunk of cement in the front garden - too large to lever up. So we just planted the apricot a little beyond it.

I also put in some sweet potato (we'll see how that goes, but I had the length of vine), and started clearing space in prep for the attempt at autumn-winter corn.

It doesn't feel much like Thursday, I gotta say. More like Friday, probably because of the long weekend upcoming. Apparently the traffic is already awful out there...

Very nice. =D I love growing avocado pits, although I never know what to do after they reach a certain size, because it's too cold to plant them outside here. And they are supposed to get too big to grow in a greenhouse. *shrugs*
I wonder if they handle pruning well? If so I may revisit the whole greenhouse idea if I get a plant growing. *rubs hands together*

Oh man, the wife and I need to get the garden together this weekend. Or at least make a pass at it. We bought our first house about 2 years ago and are slowly learning what that means. XD

Yeah, they're semi-tropical IIRC, so they can grow in subtropical/temperate zones like Sydney. (Actually, I just looked us up according to the USDA zones and apparently we're "11a" zone, which is classified as 'Tropical'. Wow. All the Australian stuff I've seen lists us as 'warm temperate/subtropical'. And haha, I just checked Hobart (our most southern state, and the one that regularly gets the windstream off the Antarctic) and they're 'Subtropical'. AHAHAHA. No. I think I'll have to go with the Australian definition...)

So far as I've heard, they do pruning well.

At the old place, we had an 'random avocado' that grew from a pit someone dropped decades ago. It was, oh, about 10-15m tall, and had heaps of avos, but they were really high up and hard to reach since nobody had pruned it. I'm hoping to keep this one around 3-4m tall: we'll see how that works out.

Oh yeah, I'm looking at all the non-fruiting trees around our property (a weeping bottlebrush - callistemon, magnolia, jacaranda, the Illawarra flame tree - brachychiton acerifolius, "yesterday, today, & tomorrow" - brunfelsia latifolia, and the frangipani) and thinking "man, that's a lot of trimming". The magnolia and the bottlebrush aren't even on our property, they just lean over onto it. Although at least they're not too extensive to manage. Small mercies!

But yes, a house is very nice, but kind of expensive. (And all the more when you don't have a job...) Ah well. We have some savings, but a job through the winter would be verry nice!

We have a beautiful little Japanese maple and some beautiful rose bushes right now. Our bleeding hearts are taking over, and we're really loathe to cut them back cause they are so very pretty. We only have one fruiting tree, the pear that we weren't attentive enough to last season. This year we will trim better. :)
