I don't usually get around to looking at the Yuletide archive before most people have posted all their recs. But this year I've been enjoying a-wandering through fields yet undiscovered...

the stuff dreams are made of (are someone else's nightmares) (9524 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Calvin & Hobbes
Rating: General Audiences

Additional Tags: Adventure, Fairy Tale Elements, Fairy Tale Logic, Susie Derkins Does Not Have Time For Your Nonesense, Canon Typical Everything, Zogwargs
Summary:

Calvin's missing. Mr Bun is suddenly a very real rabbit with startlingly big teeth. Some fairy tales are apparently real things that happened, they just happened somewhere else.

Now Susie has to rescue Cavin from the land of the fairies and get them both home before dinner, or she's going to be so grounded.

Susie does what I think of as a 'Tiffany Aching' and sets out to rescue Calvin.

crime wave (2109 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Ocean's 8 (2018), Ocean's Eleven Trilogy (Movies)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Danny Ocean & Debbie Ocean
Additional Tags: Complicated Relationships, Siblings, Pre-Canon, background Tess/Danny/Rusty/Isabel in various permutations, background Debbie/Lou, Slice of Life, older siblings: always making life difficult
Summary:

It’s 2008 and Debbie is stuck in fucking Passaic County, New Jersey because her overdramatic schmuck of a brother decided to do something stupidly attention-getting involving federal agents and people who hold grudges. Again. Which means that Debbie, like everyone else who has a connection to Danny in the eyes of both the law and the criminal underworld, has to lay low. Again.

“I hate you so much,” she says, one burner phone to another. “I hope you know that.”

You can hear George Clooney and Sandra Bullock arguing, see their expressions as they trade casual insults over the phone. It's wonderful.

Turn Right Back Around (8351 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Persuasion - Jane Austen
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Anne Elliot/Frederick Wentworth

Additional Tags: Alternate Universe, Alternate Universe - Modern Setting, Alternate Universe - Academia
Summary:

"Hey Anne, come meet Frederick Wentworth," Amy said. "He's a visiting professor in Biology. Frederick, this is Anne Elliot. She's the department lab tech."

Look, this modern AU somehow manages to depict all the characters in it canonically while being set in a tiny Vermont college town. And the longing between Anne and Frederick?
Nearly twenty years of distance had not lessened the devastating effect of Frederick Wentworth in flannel with rolled up sleeves.
That's exactly how good this AU is!

The Calvin and Hobbes one is fabulous, thank you!

I managed to eat nothing until about 3:30 this afternoon. It wasn't on purpose. We were at a friend's house from 1 pm until about 3. Before that we had slept in, and I had taken a medicine that requires I wait an hour to eat afterwards. (It has to be on an empty stomach.) A friend came by with food for us, and by the time I finished up e-mail, it was time to head out to our friend's house. So...the no eating.

We also opened gifts late. But it's been a truly lovely day.

Ahhhh Hadestown is amazing. I was lucky enough to see it on impulse in London in early 2019 after my friend reviewed it and apparently it was a Success on Broadway before the pandemic.
