Dear Yuletide Author,

Thank you so much for writing for me; it's always delightful to read a new perspective on these characters we both love, and I appreciate the effort that you've gone to in trying to make it work.

If you're so inclined, you can still look at other exchanges I've participated in under my letters tag.

Loves:
- female characters driving the action, doing the stuff, getting things done
- female friendships, friendships involving female characters
- respectful romantic relationships
- slice of life, action adventure, drama
- happy or hopeful endings

DNWs:
- Christmas/Yuletide themes (unless specifically occurs in canon)
- PWP
- pairings I haven't asked for
- character deaths, unhappy endings

dear yulegoat (complete) )

Ultimately, dear author, these are suggestions, ideas, starting points. Don't take them as gospel if you simply can't get your brain around them, just write what we matched on, avoid the Do Not Wants (DNWs), and I will enjoy reading your take on them!

Okay. I have to finish an exchange today, in between testing things that aren't working, fixing things that are broken, and making a list of what to pack for the weekend away... not that there has to be much - I'm only staying Saturday. And then I got to get out of here early...

One assignment, one PH, one treat. All got excellent receptions before reveals, with the recips all commenting, and kudos and comments arriving independent of the recips.

FANDOM: Order of the Air Series - Melissa Scott & Jo Graham
TITLE: Voices For The Voiceless for [archiveofourown.org profile] mari4212
SUMMARY: Stasi and Douglas have a conversation about the war, about people, and about right and wrong.
RATING: PG-13
TAGS: No Archive Warnings Apply, Stasi Rostov & Douglas Sorley, Douglas Sorley (Order of the Air), Stasi Rostov, parenting, Growing Up
AUTHOR'S NOTES: )

All in all, I'm very happy with how this one turned out. A little bittersweet, but also with hope.

It's the most well-received one among the target audience - the ratio of kudos to hits is the best of the three.

FANDOM: Ghostbusters (2016), Marvel Cinematic Universe
TITLE: Heroes and Fans for [archiveofourown.org profile] Bodldops
SUMMARY: Patty had a moment when she thought, They’ve separated us! And then she had a moment when she thought, It’s a trap! And then she had a moment when she thought, Get a grip on yourself, Patty! This ain’t no weirdo mad scientist – this is Tony Stark!

AUTHOR'S NOTES: )

Hit-wise, this is the most popular story out of the three, thanks to the megafandom crossover.

FANDOM: Ancient Egyptian Religion
TITLE: Older Than The Deserts for [archiveofourown.org profile] Delen
SUMMARY: Then, he was bright and unyielding, burning and nurturing both, the source of light and joy. Ra, they called him, and Khepri – the holy scarab that pushes the sun through the sky, and Atum – the final burning blaze before the darkness and the long journey through the night to the reborn dawn. Now, he is known in scrolls and in books, but no longer worshipped, no longer adored.
RATING: G
TAGS: ancient gods in a modern world
AUTHOR'S NOTES: )

This one was surprisingly well-taken; I expected only the recip would read it, let alone kudos or comment, but quite a few people have enjoyed it.

I have at least one reasonably-sized treat that didn't get completed due to time and brain. It's on the New Year's Resolution pile for Yuletide, which I have every year and somehow fail to ever complete...

Unmasked (Mulan)
Looking at the Disney movie from Shang's perspective.

One thing I particularly liked about this one is that they don't take the modern American conservative view of homosexuality and transport it to Ancient China.

Non-Christian warrior societies were generally much more lenient about male sexuality than we think - although the definition of 'homosexual' as we understand it wasn't valid. In Tang Dynasty China, one of the prospective heirs to the throne was known for his preference for men - but the issue with his succession wasn't his attraction to men, but his extravagance. And his preference would not have affected his need to beget heirs - he would have had a wife and possibly concubines on which to beget children, because marriage was a question of titles, lands, politics, and money - the personal aspect didn't come into it.

Shang doesn't assign the shame or embarrassment that we might to a male soldier who is attracted to another man; he's a little surprised at it because it's never been his 'thing', but he's well aware of his responsibilities to his name and his line and his ancestry. And he still loves and is attracted to Ping, even before he realises she's Mulan.

10 Things I Hate About Reunions (10 Things I Hate About You)

For great hilarity with the texts between Kat and Bianca, and the way she encounters Pat and their reunion and catch up and all the stuff in between.

I always plan to rec more than I do, I just forget or get lazy after a few days:

This is my gift fic, and it's wonderful - I've always wanted a 'what happens next' for Shadow Of The Moon, but it wasn't until this year that I considered asking for it in YT.

fandom: Shadow of the Moon - M.M. Kaye
title: On The Road To Lunjore
tags: Alex Randall/Winter de Ballesteros, Alex Randall, Winter de Ballesteros, Lou Cottar, Amanda English, India, External POV, Victorian India, British Raj
summary: On the way to his new job as Major Randall’s aide, a young British officer meets someone.

A crossover of two of the big hits of the year - Ghostbusters and Hamilton, with a focus on Patty, and some wonderful humour! I don't know if Angelica ever got to compel Jefferson about including women in the sequel, but I love that Patty gets to sit Jefferson's ectoplasmic ass down and give him the book, chapter, and verse on slavery!

fandom: Ghostbusters (2016), Hamilton - Miranda
title: A Revolution's Revelation
tags: Jillian Holtzmann/Patty Tolan, Jillian Holtzmann, Patty Tolan, Erin Gilbert, Abby Yates, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, Crossover
summary: They've learned over the last year and some to give Patty the lead when there's some sort of historical grudge at play. Your everyday jealousies, revenge killings, souls with unfinished business, and random demons they're all good at dealing with, but there's something about the long-gone that only Patty can handle.

I asked for Jason Bourne fic in my YT request, focused on Nicky, and while I didn't get it, it looks like other people struggled with the same issues I did in the recent movie (which I haven't seen btw).

This one is focused on Nicky:
fandom: Bourne (Movies)
title: Phoenix Rising
tags: Nicky Parsons (Damon movies)
summary: She's like the ancient myth, being reborn from the ashes of her old life.

This one is long and seriously bittersweet:
fandom: Bourne (Movies)
title: All That Is Good
tags: Jason Bourne/Nicky Parsons, Jason Bourne, Nicky Parsons, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, unprotected sex
summary: That is the difference between the two of you. Jason wants to be left alone. You want vengeance.

This one is more up my alley in tone, but I feel I'd have appreciated it better if I'd seen the movie.
fandom: Bourne (Movies)
title: this kite-flying wind
tags: Jason Bourne/Nicky Parsons, Jason Bourne/Marie Kreutz mentioned, Jason Bourne, Nicky Parsons, Fix-It, Fuck canon anyway, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence
summary: Nicky wants to save the world. Jason wants her to be safe.

And a couple of BvS: Bruce/Diana fics:

More psychological, headspace kind of interaction between them with an almost flirty angle:
fandom: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
title: Katanóisi
tags: Diana (Wonder Woman)/Bruce Wayne, Diana (Wonder Woman), Bruce Wayne, Enemies to Friends, Post-Canon, Pre-Relationship, Pre-Justice League (2017), Bruce Wayne has issues with boundaries
summary: When he sends her the flowers, he isn’t quite sure how she’ll take it.

And the straight-up hotness of the fakeout makeout:
fandom: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
title: oh cameraman, swing the focus
tags: Diana (Wonder Woman)/Bruce Wayne, Diana (Wonder Woman), Bruce Wayne
summary: Public displays of affection make people uncomfortable.

So now that Yuletide has been revealed, these are my four gift-fics for the 2015 Season:

Yuletide Assignment

fandom: Mad Max: Fury Road
title: The Road To Legend
summary: Fair go, whisper the eddy currents, stirring the sands. Not easy pickings, but a fair go.
rating: PG-13
characters/pairings: Furiosa, Capable, The Dag, Corpus Colossus, Toast The Knowing, Cheedo The Fragile, Max Rockatansky
tags: Post-Movie(s), Slice of Life, Misses Clause Challenge

This was my assignment, and I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to do and how I wanted to do it. It worked out pretty well, I think, but wasn't very popular. Someone else had written a better, more detailed version of this story, and their work was more recently posted (mine was the first Mad Max Fury Road fic posted in the YT challenge) and so by the time people got around to reading it (if they did), they were 'eh, not as good'.

Yuletide Pinch-Hit

fandom: Tokyo Crazy Paradise
title: Magnet And Steel
summary: The boy he used to be trapped her into service; the man he is becoming wants her to stay of her own desire.
rating: PG-13
characters/pairings: Shirogami Ryuji/Kozuki Tsukasa, Shirogami Ryuji, Kozuki Tsukasa, Shibuya (Tokyo Crazy Paradise)

Until two days ago (when someone posted three little ficlets), I had written the only two fics in this fandom on AO3. And, yes, last years YT Madness ficlet "Chrysalis" connects with this YT assignment fic "Magnet and Steel". I nearly linked the two, but decided, no, I wouldn't. I did anon Chrysalis after I posted, though. Just in case.

This was kind of fun to write - I've had some little bitty plot bits and pieces here and there for this manga ever since I read it back in...oh, 2009? Writing last year's Madness ficlet and this year's pinch hit forced me to actually complete them.

I guess I'll have to actually write the story where Tsukasa climbs into Ryuji's bed as an acceptance of their relationship, won't I?

Maybe next Yuletide....

Pacific Rim Secret Santa

title: together we are not optional
summary: Co-pilots, after the Drift.
rating: PG-13
characters/pairings: Mako/Raleigh, Caitlin Lightcap/Sergio D'Onofrio, Mako, Raleigh, Herc, Caitlin, Sergio
tags: relationship, love, friends, angst, fluff

The request was for Caitlin/Sergio taking Mako/Raleigh in during the holiday season. But the movie happens at the start of the new year, so the next 'holiday season' would be the Lunar New Year - which, given the strong focus of PR on the Asian countries, would be perfect.

However, there was the small issue of actually getting Mako and Raleigh together first. I've wanted to address the issue of previous sexual partners before in fic, particularly since I could write either Mako or Raleigh as ace, but since they have such a lovely respectful relationship, I really prefer them as het - and hot for each other, but working out how the whole issue of boundaries works.

So Part 1 is them getting together, and Part 2 is them working out how to balance it all in the midst of the crazy publicity that would be post-Pitfall in the Jaeger program. It's a very simple piece, which is just as well, because the Captain Hill Secret Santa was kind of crazymaking.

Captain Hill Secret Santa

title: Personal Is Not The Same As Important
summary: Personal is not the same as important. Maria Hill and Steve Rogers understand this far too well.
rating: M - canon-standard violence, flashbacks of physiological and mental torture.
characters/pairings: Maria/Steve, Maria, Steve, Rhodey, Akela Amador, Cameron Klein (Technician Guy), Melinda May's Mom, Original Male Character...and then we get into cameo territory, which is Pepper Potts, Nick Fury, Natasha, Sam, Vision, Wanda...
tags: Civil War (Marvel), Angst Action/Adventure, Happy Ending, Aftermath of Torture, Psychological Torture

Oh look, it's yet another Maria-in-Civil-War fic. Actually, the recip was a late entry into the Secret Santa. So I gave her my assignment and took hers on instead - and she wanted something that dealt with MCU Civil War. This was the short version and the happy-ending version. (Seriously, the long version involved a trip to Asgard, Maria picking up the Hammer, and ending up holding the universe together while pregnant with Steve's child to stave off Ragnarok. And it was angsty as hell, in case you couldn't tell.)

So, I wrote the Civil War section of the fic. Which featured Maria being awesome, because this is me and this is Maria Hill. And then, because there was no way that Maria was just going to forgive Steve and take him back...it turned into a two parter. With a side of torture and psychological angst, because it's kind of fun putting Steve through the emotional wringer. I was writing the penultimate scene when I realised the connection between the two (sometimes my brain does this; I'm writing something without quite knowing where it's going, and then BANG the connection to the beginning is there and it is Very Good) and then it was tea and happy endings.

--

So that was my 2015 Christmas Season.

Now to do the Year In Fic list... Sheesh.

I have my recip and it is all good.

Well, except for the bit where ze's letter makes me want to go out and start playing the vid game fandom ze always requests but never gets...

I also have my Candy and Drink swaps, and they are also good. Although it would appear that I need MOAR COFFEE. *wonders where she could get a selection of good coffee grounds locally*

Not literal consumption, of course.

things I like

I'm always about the female characters, their goals, their hopes, their dreams, their wants and desires and agency. So I hope this is in line with what you can write, because I love me the female characters and their stories! (We should have matched on female characters, that's mostly what I requested, after all!)

I really like the idea of the women in a canon being connected to each other, even if they don't necessarily like each other. But they respect what they can do, and they don't tear each other down because they've been there and they've watched the guys do that, and they're not going to be like that. In short, women being awesome, and women being awesome to each other.

Where relevant, I've listed pairing preferences; generally, stick with canon if you can't do the pairing.

all the small fandoms )

In the end, just write your thing about the character(s) we matched on in the fandom we both want to see more fic for, and we'll get along like a house on fire.

Although hopefully with less screaming, property destruction, and cold water being thrown at us.

I wrote six fics for Yuletide this year, from average to completely unpopular, and received one.

My Gift
FANDOM: The Blue Castle - L.M. Montgomery
TITLE: Something Frivolous And Fine

CHARACTERS: Barney Snaith, Valancy Stirling
SUMMARY: Barney heeds Valancy's request for something frivolous for Christmas.
MY THOUGHTS: I asked for something on Barney's thoughts on Valancy through the book and this did a beautiful, beautiful job of it. There's a bunch of (read: more than one) Blue Castle fic in Yuletide and Yuletide Madness this year, so if that's your fandom, run over and check it out!

Assignment

FANDOM: Discword - Terry Pratchett
TITLE: Interview With A Vetinari

CHARACTERS: Vimes, Vetinari, Lady Sibyl Ramkin, Susan Sto Helit
SUMMARY: On the matter of education for young Samuel Vimes.
MY THOUGHTS: My most popular YT fic this year. (That's not saying much.) It took forever, and I kind of wanted to write more of it, where Susan continued to governess for young Samuel (and Lobsang was 'her young man') and Vimes got suspicious about her and eventually worked out that she wasn't quite human, but I ran out of time. As it was, I posted this just in time for the deadline and only just finished editing it before the archive opened. ("Now, with bonus footnotes!")

Pinch Hits

FANDOM: Psy-Changelings - Nalini Singh
TITLE: And A Little Cub Shall Lead Them

CHARACTERS: Judd Lauren, Ben Stone, Mercy Smith, Kaleb Krychek, Sahara Kyriakus
SUMMARY: Innocent children. Dangerous men. And the rigours of babysitting.
MY THOUGHTS: I'm not entirely certain that Kaleb would do this (turn up in SnowDancer/DarkRiver territory without announcing) simply because I'm not 100% the Changelings wouldn't take offence to it. This one waswell-received by a lot of people, probably because it featured the 'murder bros' - Judd and Kaleb - and copious amounts of cute. I may have inadvertantly written Ben younger than he is in the series.

FANDOM: Exiles - Melanie Rawn
TITLE: Love And Letting Go

CHARACTERS: Sarra Ambrai, Cailet Ambrai
SUMMARY: It's not the first time she's let her daughter go.
MY THOUGHTS: An emergency pinch-hit I picked up, and which I think worked rather nicely in a mothers/daughters angle, with Sarra&Taigan, Cailet&her daughter, and Maichen Ambrai shadowy in the background. I may have judiciously translated some of the scenarios depicted in the fanfic duology Ms. Rawn wrote a long time ago in a fandom far far away, off which the Exiles trilogy was based. :)

Madness treats

FANDOM: Terminator movies (Terminator 3)
TITLE: No Comfort

CHARACTERS: Kate Brewster, John Connor
SUMMARY: Later, lying in the dark with the weight of a mountain above her, Kate wonders if she should resent that he didn't try to be kind.
MY THOUGHTS: I picked this because I like the canon and I like the character of Kate and her relationship with John. The exact manner of their relationship was difficult post-movie, because Kate was living and affianced to Scott up to the morning of Judgement Day, and I don't imagin it was an arranged marriage! So she's not just going to fall into bed with John, regardless of Kripke's basement or their predicted future. I think it turned out pretty okay.

FANDOM: Psy-Changelings - Nalini Singh
TITLE: The Sense Of Coming Home

CHARACTERS: Naya Hunter, Julian Ryder
SUMMARY: The thing about coming home is that...it's coming home.
MY THOUGHTS: I kind of cheated with this one - it's the barest start of a futurefic that could possibly get epic. And not very good when you look at it comparatively with the Naya/Julian fics that were written for the main archive and are full-sized, well-developed, excellently-characterised stories. But I really wanted to write something that was about love (like Adria and Riaz's story was) not about the mating bond. And this was going to be the start of it.

It might still be the start of it. We'll see.

FANDOM: Tokyo Crazy Paradise
TITLE: Chrysalis

CHARACTERS: Kozuki Tsukasa, Shirogami Ryuji, Meiko
SUMMARY: This relationship unfolds beyond the customary parameters, and they and those around them must learn to adjust.
MY THOUGHTS: I've had this idea for a while, and the prompt gave me the impetus to write it. However, I think it's winning at 'least popular fic in Madness' - no comments, no kudos! All other fics in the archive have at least one or the other. (Admittedly, it's hampered by being a really really rare fandom - I think this fic is the first one on AO3, however my recip has commented on her giftfic so that's a wee smidge demoralising.) I have three more chapters two of which are about 80% done, but the last one which is proving a little problematic. And the response isn't helping.

Ah well, luck of the year. Last year was a very good year for me in YT. This one, not so much.

Happy Yuletide, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year to all!
tielan: Wonder Woman (Default)
Tuesday, December 30th, 2014 10:53 pm
FANDOM: Discworld - Terry Pratchett
TITLE: every map is blank
SUMMARY: Tiffany thinks about the future.
CHARACTERS: Tiffany Aching
WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Because the author has gotten Tiffany's 'voice' down PERFECTLY in Pterry's style. The story weaves together all the little threads of Tiffany's history and present and the questions about her future, and it works in the way that makes me long for Pterry's older work.

FANDOM: Psy-Changeling - Nalini Singh
TITLE: Web Of Stars
SUMMARY: Naya and Julian struggle with the mating bond.
CHARACTERS: Nadiya "Naya" Hunter, Julian Ryder
WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: While I do love the mated pairs in Singh's Psy-Changeling universe, there's a part of me that's always thought it must be kind of terrifying. And this story hits me in the id - Naya as a tough, capable woman faced with a choice to be loved by a man who's not going to give up on her, even as he gives her space. But the real gems of the writing are the interactions between the various characters - between Naya and Keenan, between Julian and Roman, and even the 'interrogation' of Naya by Mercy and Dorian.

FANDOM: The Blue Castle - L.M Montgomery.
TITLE: Something Frivolous And Fine
SUMMARY: Barney heeds Valancy's request for something frivolous for Christmas.
CHARACTERS: Barney Snaith, Valancy Stirling
WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: It's so nice to see the world of Valancy Stirling from inside Barney's head - the intimacies and care he has for Valancy, the little bits and pieces of their life together, the way he's in love with her and doesn't know it - won't know it until the day on the tracks. It's beautifully done, and sweet and aching all at once.

FANDOM: The Princess And The Frog (Disney)
TITLE: The Queen Says Let Them Eat Cake
SUMMARY: In Tiana's opinion this royalty business isn't all it's cracked up to be.
CHARACTERS: Tiana, Naveen
WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Tiana and Naveen have to go back to Maldonia to be married ("properly") and, oh, everything in this is true to character and true to the realities of life. From Tiana's uncertainty about to world, to her treatment because of the colour of her skin, to Naveen's method of helping her find her balance again. So sweet and real and well done!

FANDOM: Prince Of Egypt
TITLE: The Last Challenge
SUMMARY: At two, Rameses thought all babies arrived in baskets.
CHARACTERS: Ramses
WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Because it adds an extra heartbreaking layer to the relationship between Ramses and Moses.

First, dear Yulegoat, thank you for writing for me! We love the same fandoms and the same characters, and I hope you enjoy writing my story as much as I will enjoy reading it!

Second, be it known that I love a focus on female characters, their strengths and weaknesses, their agency and the choices they make. Even when I've specified a male character, I'd really like to know his thoughts about the female character mentioned.

Third, if you can't write the pairings that I've mentioned, then writing friendship is definitely okay with me.

Tokyo Crazy Paradise, Exiles (Melanie Rawn), The Blue Castle (L.M.Montgomery) )

Lastly, dear Yulegoat, I hope that whatever it is you're writing for me, you enjoy writing it and don't stress too much about it. Yuletide is for the love of small fandoms, and should be at least a little fun amidst the hair-tearing and muse-blocking and general frustration of trying to write a fic!

(And thank you for doing this! Again!)

As it is, I'm debating about reading/kudosing/commenting on the PR Secret Santa fics other than the one gifted to me since I organised it. Although it might be a bit late for that since I've already read through a couple of the pairings I like...

Just a few to get the ball rolling. I'm being methodical this year, going through them fandom by fandom.

--

The Adventure Of The Snow Leopard

It's a scene or vignette from Sherlock's POV. The formatting is a little odd, but the flow of Sherlock's thoughts is quite delightful - all those little thoughts neatly filed and organised, prepared for relevance. If you can get past the formatting, it's a very enjoyable fic.

--

a necessary conjunction

This feels more like the start of a longer casefic, and I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't. But it's still well done, intriguing and with a nice callback to The Adventure Of The Red-Headed League.

Three Anniversaries: A Love Story

The summary of this story says it perfectly. Not all love stories are about romance.

How It Works:

Post to your DW/LJ (publicly or locked) with a list of ten things you want to receive for the holidays. They can be anything, from a personalized DW/LJ icon or drabble to a purebred puppy - as long as all the items on the list are things that you genuinely want.

If there's anything on your list that needs to come to you through the mail, make your shipping address available, but please be safe about it and don't post that part publicly - just specify how people should go about getting it.

Next:

Look around your circle/friends list for others who have posted the meme. (The more who do, the better this works, so encourage them!) If you see a wish you can grant, GO FOR IT. You might find a little thing you can do for free that will make someone happy, or you might just discover that a stranger is longing for the exact boxed set of DVDs that you no longer want.

Don't spend money unless you want to, and don't commit to more than you can handle without stressing yourself. There are no rules to this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. If someone surprises you with a gift certificate to the restaurant you never thought you'd get to go to, don't feel guilty or obliged to return the favor. The point is to spread around a lot of opportunities to grant wishes - use them as you see fit, and remember that your list gives those opportunities to others!

Tips:

Dream big, but stay practical. If you really want the Mercedes, put the Mercedes on the list, but don't forget that you also really want some feedback on the story you wrote - so put that on the list too. It's fun to imagine something huge happening through this meme, but we'll recognizes the unlikelihood of it and make sure our friends still have a chance to do something thoughtful that's within their means.

Put limits on yourself for what, but not who: if you've decided that you can spend a few hours drawing a picture, but none of your friends are asking for one, keep looking for wishlists - you might even make a new friend or two! Ask people to link their lists for you, and don't be afraid to post your own in a few places.

Let's make some wishes come true this year!

My Wishlist )

Link your lists in the comments, and I'll see what I can do for you. Or for others on your f-list.
