My recipient matched me on three fandoms - THREE! All from the 90s (oh, wait, I think the Alberich books are 00s), but the ideas about Sean and Sorka and the early years of the weyr and how the weyrs set up differently from the holds were what caught my interest.

Amusingly, several of you commented on my fic before the reveals. Which is always good to know that people like the fic and aren't just clicking for the name!

from the childless cat lady 4eva

After TS's endorsement, it occurred to me that I am now a childless cat lady 4eva. I mean, I knew I was one already, but the '4-eva' bit is important.

Yesterday was a very active day. (Where 'active' is relative: I spent it mostly meal-prepping some salad jars.) I decided against bible study, one part 'very annoying stitch', one part respiratory issue that doesn't seem to be going away.

Slightly sore throat. Slightly raspy breath. I got some twinges in the upper lungs, but that might also be the way I'm sitting. Or the medications, which say "don't take if you have asthma" which I don't on a medical grade, but I do have a puffer for when I get respiratory issues (which have been flaring on and off for the last five years).

I didn't go to sleep with painkillers, it's more twinges than discomfort. Anti-inflammatories and anti-biotics, yes, but I wanted to see how I'd go without painkillers. I didn't sleep really well; sort of so-so. So maybe I'll do some lighter painkillers tonight?

Today, with the help of B1, I have sown the lower lawn with clover. She doesn't like clover (because it takes over), I like it because it's hard for the chooks to kill. And it's a legume that pulls nitrogen from the air and puts it in the ground.

The south lawn has been somewhat de-lawned by the roaming of the chooks over the last six months, and I am planting things that might do better at growing and re-growing over the coming years. It's not good for the soil to be bare too long, and clover should do a decent job of covering things over.

Not one but two new readers going through and not only reading but commenting on my fic has made me go back through my MCU/Maria Hill stuff over the last dozen years. It's always interesting to see what prompts people to leave comments. Also, interesting to watch the way things shifted over the years.

I'm still bitter; I'll always be bitter. But it was a good run in fandom, and I made plenty of my current swathe of friends out of it. *mwah*

Missed out on nominating for ToT exchange, so I won't sign up, even though I never either receive an MCU:Maria Hill fic, or get assigned one, I still feel...out of place? Not quite there? Weird? ...when signing up when I haven't nominated. (Also: dozens of MCU pairings/characters, none that I'm really interested in.)

Need to work out what I want for Yuletide. Even though the last couple of years have been 'only just squeaked my assignment in'. I'll still play; it's still fun and sometimes a challenge.

Goal for writing this year is to finish The Nullifae: Agent of Change (or whatever I've called the first book) and start the first-person rewrite.

Wait, it's already gone.

Trying to nominate for YT. Trying to imagine what I'd like. Which characters in Melanie Rawn's casts of thousands? Do I want S.W.A.T or Tokyo Crazy Paradise? Should I take a punt on Spiderman Ultimates or just give up? Has anyone nominated the 500 Kingdoms yet? I want someone's take on JoJo of the Rainfire pack! But I also want the courtship of Danae and Talen from the Elenium!

ARGH.

It's actually almost impossibly tricky to pick something that at least a couple of other people know and are willing to write, let alone want. *sigh* Also there is the perennial problem (not just YT) of, even if there are people in my fandom, they don't want the characters or relationships that I do. I know, YT doesn't require relationships. But still.

Otherwise it is the Mid-Autumn Festival throughout Asia. I want to make mooncakes and have bought a ridiculous amount of ingredients towards that end... Whether it will get made this side of Christmas? *shrugs*

Honestly, I just kinda want to cook for people. I think there's something psychological in it. Comfort food, but also comfort company.

Work is kind of quiet right now, with perhaps the exception of a go-live that is...probably happening this Sunday. Some Sunday work was always to be expected in this job. It hasn't yet clashed with hockey, we might see how that goes in the next year...

I feel like I've forgotten how to transition scenes at some point. I don't know when to skip over the detail and when to draw the complete picture. I can plot a gripping story from go to whoa, but which bits to do sweepting strokes and which bits to pick out with a fine-brush? That's hard.

I need new icons. Or, at least, different ones. I don't like all these ones anymore, and I need a better selection.

I'm a little surprised how well it did comparative to what I was expecting. Even before reveals, it had about 35 kudos and 8 comments, which was way more than I ever thought it would see.

My initial go-to was the recipient's request for an amnesia fic, and I started something down that path but it didn't work the way I wanted it to go. So I ended up taking the idea of a 3rd party POV of Mulan's escapades, and particularly of her and Shang working together. I tied it into neo-Confucianism, which is a bit like neo-conservativism: women have a proper place, etc. Only the neo-Confucianists tied it into the gods and a philosophical Way That Things Should Be rather than the traditions and rose-coloured glasses of neo-conservatism.

As it turns out, the Pern fic was by someone who treated me a Lessa/F'lar Pernfic for Yuletide last year. Awesome. :D

But I was completely and utterly wrong on the Psy-Changeling fic. Never seen that person in my fandom life and they've only got 4 fics on AO3, and are largely in Teen Wolf and Critical Role fandoms.

Anyway, I seriously lucked out this year in Yuletide. xo

This is not a dynamic that I've ever given a second thought, but the scene and the encounter really works. I never thought much about Wilhelmina and Karla after the books, even though I read The Shadow Queen and Shalador's Lady, but this conclusion and their characterisation works beautifully for me.

Today was very good - lovely 'rellos bash' with plenty of relatives, but I am absolutely shattered and desperately need sleep because tomorrow we get to do it all again, only it'll be at Mum's instad of my uncle's, and instead of the 6-8 people I expected there are going to be 17, many of them strangers.

So, dear authors? If you are here and reading this, I am absolutely hanging out to read your fics for me, but I really really need sleep and rest and sanity and time/space to give it the attention it deserves, and I won't have that for at least another 18 hours.

I wrote three fics (come sailing in, on Christmas Day, on Christmas Day): my assignment, and two pinch hits.

I've never written Anne of Green Gables fic before; so this was definitely something of a challenge. I had to research Canadian settler history, the probable social differences between rural PEI (Glen St Mary) and Toronto (where the Fords ended up) in the 1920s after The Great War, and even then I only really managed a snippet of interaction between Ken and Rilla.

What I really wanted to write was Ken and Rilla dealing with his PTSD/survivor's guilt from the war, but the request was for lighter, so I didn't feel right about putting that on my recip.

FANDOM: Dragonriders of Pern
TITLE: The Queens Love These Times
SUMMARY: Shortly after the Five Weyrs come forward, Prideth rises to mate. Lessa and F’lar escape to the South.
CHARACTERS: Lessa, F'lar

The characterisation in this one is absolutely spot on. Lessa is still wonderfully prickly and I love the banter. The author said she was trying to go for pure fluff but felt the characters were too responsible not to do a bit of recon, and I think that it works so much better for the touch of concern and consideration that they still give for the needs of the weyr.

FANDOM: Jupiter Ascending
TITLE: Dinner for Two
SUMMARY: A dinner, a confession.
CHARACTERS: Jupiter, Caine

This one is pure fluffy goodness, with Jupiter being very much a modern young woman of Earth beneath the imperial space queen, and Caine being appreciative of Jupiter's attentions, even as he think he's beneath her. It makes me want to pull out my half-finished Jupiter/Caine fics and actually try to finish one.

I am delighted with both of them, and actively reading through the archive for canons that I know, which I don't usually do. I still have a dozen tabs open, mostly of longer stories of 3K or more, so I'll work my way through it over the next few days.
