Well, I've put the bug in the ear. I doubt it will accomplish very much, to be honest. But at least I tried.
I think that my involvement henceforth will be minimal. Considering that I'm still moderated after four months of posting, that the front page is chaotic and uninviting, and that they only respond to the fluffyfic, I'm not going to bother with the interacting - I'll post my stories and that's about it.
It occurs to me that mailing lists are good for when you want a message to go through to a very specific source. For instance, specifically people who want to see a particular pairing. On the other hand, people who aren't initially interested in that pairing won't ever get to see the fic, because they won't ever receive the mails.
Which is where LJ comes in. LJ is about community, about interaction, about fraying at the edges and adopting new ideas. I would never have done Teyla/Bates if not for LJ. Ditto with Ronan/Weir. And if I could be converted to other people's pairings, why can't they be converted to mine? Okay, so some people have closed minds about some pairings. And I have a closed mind about others.
But bleeding still happens: it's a slow process of seeping into the soil, a steady drip-drip-drip of other ideas. And yes, one comes out corrupted by those whom one has corrupted in turn; but that's the nature of life, the universe, and everything.
In the last couple of stories posted, my greatest pleasure has been hearing back from people who've said: "I would never have considered this pairing before, but you've done them really well!" I don't get many of them, but those that I receive, I treasure. Because "SQUEE!" means you made them happy for the length of the story, but adjusting their perspective means you changed the way they think. And that could last anywhere from an hour to the rest of their life.
Incidentally, is it just me, or is it extremely sucky that you can't pay for just 15 icons anymore? I want more than 3 icons, but not 100, and I don't need a paid account. Instead of paying for 100 icons for 2 months, can I pay for 15 icons for a year? It works out about the same. Please?

It's kinda crazy. I mean, I don't care since I've got a permanent account, but it makes sense from a marketing point of view to offer several different types of product - niche marketing - especially since it's not like they have to program something new for it or anything. Because there are people who, like you, would like something between the two options. Crazy.

The icon thing is extremely sucky. I wonder if it's worth asking if they could set it up so there's a smaller number of icons for a longer timespan.
