We got HoneySoy and Hainan chicken as 6 month old pullets back in 2017. They came already acclimatised to each other, and living in a solid wooden triangle coop with two wheels that was supposed to be moved through the garden.
HoneySoy was put to sleep about a year ago after persisting reproductive issues, and today it's Hainan's turn to go.
She was a good layer in her time, but a lazy scratcher compared to Honey. She ruled the roost, ruthlessly attacking new additions to the flock, and remained top chook even after she stopped laying.
The sistren are pretty distraught. They see her as a pet who happens to lay eggs. I'm...more pragmatic about the chickens. They're adorable and amusing, but they're productive animals to me. Honey Soy and Hainan were bought for a purpose: not just for eggs, but for tilling and manure and entertainment.
And entertainment they certainly provided. Hainan has her own themesong: Brave Hainan Chicken to the tune of Brave Brave Sir Robin of Holy Grail fame - due to the way she could run like the wind - particularly if you were trying to catch her for the purposes of medication or even just a cuddle. One fully understood the link between dinosaurs and birds when one watched Hainan sprint across the grass.
I guess I always considered the possibility that I might have to kill the chooks myself; that it might be necessary to learn how to slaughter them. Perhaps that's in the future at some point. But today, we got Hainan put to sleep and then lethally injected.

RIP Hainan chicken, you were the bravest chicken to ever bravely run away.
