As to the drowning in dust and fur, I feel you on that. My family had a chow/German Shepherd mix when I was a kid, and she had a double coat: German Shepherd hair on top, Chow fur under that. During shedding season you could spend literally an hour brushing her fur to get stuff out of it, and brush out practically her weight in fur ... and then when you were done she'd get up and walk away and you could SEE her shedding and little tufts of fur drifting off her body. Brushing her did help, and so did vacuuming and dusting a lot; but it didn't FEEL like it did, it still felt like that was everywhere no matter what. With that many cats and people in a house, you might find you have the same issue. It sucks.
