This is mostly going to be ramble, feel free to ignore or disdain as you choose.

Bridgerton S3 - episodes 2-4

So, I don't do well with humiliation humour, so one of the difficulties of this season has been me not flinching at all Pen's embarrassing faux pas.

I am a sucker for angst, though, so Colin realising he's in love with Pen has been wonderful. The slow shift from (outwardly) callow gentleman to ardent lover has been magnificent.

I am also a sucker for nice guys who are boring, so Lord Debling is quite up my alley. I am somewhat disappointed that even 'affection' was too much for him (as per the discussion with Pen while they were dancing, before he decided not to ask her). That said, I'd take a Lord Debling in an instant: someone with money and title, away for long periods of time, leaving me free to do my own thing? ABSOLUTELY. SIGN ME UP.

The thing with the inheritances is...kind of weird. In part because this is most decidedly not even faintly what Regency inheritance looked like. I know, I know, Bridgerton runs almost entirely on vibes. But it feels somehow wrong that they just make the rules up to suit whatever storyline is being pushed at the time.

I've never been fond of Portia Featherington exactly; she's a little too much pushy mama for my tastes. And Violet - however well-intentioned and classy - is also a little too helicopter parent than I like to see. But they both do care very much about their chidren, even if the way they show it doesn't really work for the daughter in question.

Francesca's romance with John has been...not quite what I hoped for. I do like the way they're both portrayed as on the very introverted side of the scale, but I wanted a little more spark between them. (I know, that's coming with Michaela, I've heard spoilers.) And I do like the fact that Francesca and John clearly understand each other, but...I'd have liked a little more communing at least! But it was sweet seeing Fran become eager for John's company, whereas the rest of the time she was mostly putting up with all the stuff surrounding it.

Eloise and Cressida are an interesting pair, for sure. I wonder if Cressida is going to end up with Lord Debling, or if the whole Whistledown situation will end up shaming her out of society. Or whatever it is that lies behind Door Number Three. I am seeing Eloise being, well, certainly fairly oblivious to other people's feelings - she's more than a little self-involved, alas. Has good points, of course, but...young and, well, callow.

It has sadly been very noticeable that Anthony and Kate are missing from episode 2 to episode 4 after being very visible in ep 1. I imagine the Bridgerton Kate/Anthony groups I was in are very displeased; I haven't actually gone back into any of them after reaslising how minor the role Anthony and Kate play in the series. I'm disappointed in that, all things considered.

And on the periphery, Hyacinth is delightful (I know it's unlikely, but I would love to see Hyacinth's season - it would be hysterical watching that girl run amok in the ton), Gregory needs to move out beyond 'whiny little brother' (although, really, that is a large part of his position in the panoply of Bridgertons), and Benedict's relationship with the widow...

...am I the only one who is thinking that Jess Brownell (showrunner) basically got herself written into the plot just because she wanted to? That's the way I'm tending right now. It doesn't really seem to add anything to Benedict's storyline, although maybe that will come in the 2nd half of the season? I know next season is supposed to be Benedict's story, at least, so that will go somewhere. But...I'm a little meh about Benedict/the widow.

The subtitles, btw, are hilarious. But we have to turn them off for the sex scenes.

"[heavy breathing] [gasping, moaning] [Penelope grunts]"

We'll probably get around to watching the rest of the season in the coming weeks. It's mostly finding a time when both B1 and myself can watch. I need someone to debrief with because otherwise I can't watch it.
