Played two games of hockey last night. This morning, the body is Not Happy, Jan!
First game with Team 1: lost, 1-2.
One of the umpires was a teenager (possibly a schoolfriend of one of the players from the other team) and probably called up in a hurry because she was vastly insufficient to the level of the game. A slew of issues went uncalled, including some dangerous tackling from behind, and two of our players got green cards.
I was on for about 35 minutes out of 70. There was quite a bit of running, and some of it was just trying to work out where the team needed me to be to pick up the ball or to defend against the attacking team. We had them at assorted points, but in the 2nd half, the bad umpire was reffing our attacking half, and we simply couldn't get a break.
Ah well.
Second game with my team: won, 4-3.
But it was a struggle: 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, 3-2, 4-2, 4-3...
They had at least one player who was down from B-grade, and we didn't mark her hard enough. I think we assigned one of our players to her in the 2nd half, but by then it was too late. I'd have picked her up myself if I hadn't played the previous game, because by the time we got to the last quarter, my calves were cramping something awful.
I played most of the game in the forward line until the last quarter when I was due to be in the half-line. Scored a goal - the fourth goal, angling it in off a short corner by way of my kneecap. Ow.
The kneecap didn't change the trajectory of the ball from my stick to the goal, so I guess they allowed it. That, or they didn't see it. But I did have to drop from a half-back position to the full defensive position.
That said, I still did a lot of running. Our backs are not swift movers, and at least one of them isn't either a swift mover or a solid defence. We were also leaving far too many players unmarked in our defensive half, because our defensive halves were up on the attack. Which meant I had to move up and be the first line of defence/harrying, because I'm better at the intercept on the move and chasing down the player with the ball.
But, yeah, there were a few moments in the last 10 minutes where my calves were twitchy with that "we're about to seize, fyi" feeling. Not a good one when your team wants you on the field to intercept in a defensive game.
The penalty corner off which our opponents scored a goal, I asked to stay behind: a) because twitchy calves, b) because I felt I'd be more use in defence. But, yeah, they scored, so we ended up at 4-3. Can't be helped.
The goalie was not our usual goalie (which didn't help). Our regular goalie ran an ultramarathon the day before (!!!) and was not going to be up to playing, which she'd let us know weeks ago. Then two weeks ago, one of our midfielders bashed her little toe against a brick wall and needed a bit of recovery time, so she padded up.
At this end of the competition gets a little choppy. Injuries sustained through the season. Bodies not quite being able to take the hits. School holidays, then the Masters weekend (older players playing shorter games all weekend), then a couple more games...and then the finals series.
Last night, I stretched, I rollered my back and thighs. My kneecap had a nice little button bruise on it - you know those reddish dots that turn up in the middle of a bruise? Yep, one of those. It wasn't much fun to fall asleep with, either, although I took some painkillers (panadol and ibuprofen, both), slept pretty well, and woke without too much pain.
This morning I went for a walk, only about 500m but the body needed it. I would have gone for a short jog, but I wasn't sure the knee would take it. Walking helped a little, but still 'oof'. As it is, I'm not sure the foot will take it - the padding on the sole of my hockey boot has slowly collapsed over the last couple of years, and the insert I put in for the arch isn't taking as much of the weight as I wanted it to.
Well, we'll see how things go after next weekend, playing (at least) 5 short games - last year, it was 6! I think next week is going to be exceeeeedingly painful... And I won't be home for the first half of the week...
