I didn't encounter Diane Duane's Wizardry books (YA) until I was an adult, and I have to admit I'm not sure I would have read these as a teen. However, I love the maturity of the protagonists, the issues they face, the way it starts off being about how they find magic, and then becomes about how they keep going with life and school and growing up happening all around them.
The first book was written in 1983 and so the first few stories were rather dated, even when I bought them in the early 00s. Now that it's 2013, however, it's very hard for younger readers to conceive of a time without the internet, eBay, Twitter, or when personal computers were only just beginning to be accepted into homes. So
dduane has updated the first four books to a 'Millenium Edition', which means she's brought the technology of the books somewhat in line with a more modern timeline. (eg. what was 1983 is now moved to 2008)
I haven't read the Millenium Editions yet, but I'm interested in seeing how the shift was made and comparing the two texts. And, given that it's Diane Duane, I'm sure the new editions will still be as fantastic and enjoyable and complex in their storytelling as the originals were.
Best of all, since the Millenium ebook Editions are more or less being managed and sold by the author herself at her ebook store, they are DRM-free!
I bought the first four Millenium Editions in ebook format and encourage any fans of
dduane to do the same.
