poetry: unempathy

"They're simple folk,"
said the organiser.
"Don't get too fancy."

My friend picked up an egg sandwich,
oozing mayo at the crust.
"I don't know why they liked
your ham and cheese so much."
The frill of lettuce poked out the corner of her mouth.
"These ones are so much nicer."
