I'm pretty much with you. I couldn't resist, so I watched Search and Rescue on Youtube. Kanaan isn't portrayed as a bad guy, just as kind of timid. It reinforces what Teyla said about him in season 4 when she was talking to Keller, that Kanaan was someone who didn't realize his own inner strength, and therefore seemed weaker than he is. This theme of his unwillingness to act continues.
And, in my opinion, with no spoilers to base this on, you're totally right about the Teyla/Ronon, Teyla/John thing. The relationship between Teyla and John has always been more sexual than that of Teyla and Ronon, especially from John's pov. I mean, he grabs Weir in conversion, he kisses Teyla (and he beats the crap out of Ronon).
